Upgrade/uninstall problem
Did some searches but couldn't find a solution.
I recently tried to upgrade to 2.34.0. The upgrade failed because the version 2.28.0 msi file could not be found (the installed version). I did not know you had to retain the msi file after installation - normally they are there but I did a clean-up. Hmm. Anyway, I could not upgrade. I then tried to uninstall Calibre so I could do a clean install. That failed too as again, it could not find the msi. I have been trying to find out how to get the msi file for 2.28.0 but have no luck. Does anyone know how fix this or can tell me how to get 2.28. Thanks. |

(The issue actually came up several times that I can remember.)
I think the issue basically boiled down to some registry key pointing at the original location of the MSI -- apparently Windows Installer service isn't clever enough to stop looking for it and proceed with the uninstall if the MSI was on a disk that is no longer available? Cleaning the registry with CCleaner would fix the problem. |

But be wary of CCleaner on Win 10. A few days after my upgrade I noticed a lot of registry crud, in Autoruns, Notification settings etc. So I thought, ah-ah, CCleaner will take care of that. So I blithely ran it as I've been doing in Win 7 for the past few years - until all entries it thought were crud were gone. And then I discovered I'd wrought absolute havoc, the system was a shambles. So I thought, ah-ah, no worries I'll restore the registry I saved on before first run of CCleaner. Oh, no... Windows says it can't apply the registry patch. Luckily I'd taken a restore point shortly before I decided to use CCleaner, and I was able to restore from it. There's a warning at the Piriform site suggesting that CCleaner registry may cause problems on Windows 10 - would make more sense if CCleaner itself popped a message - "Warning, Win10 detected - registry cleaning may not work properly - use at your own risk". maybe someone who knows could post the location of the relevant registry key for manual cleaning.
I had this bug many versions ago; another fix is to find the calibre installer for that specific old version and re-install then remove it. that is how I dealt with it, way back. I think old calibre versions are archived somewhere not too hard to find. PS I have used CCleaner reg clean in w10 and survived to tell the tale, but I was checking only for specific fault types ( invalid paths) , not for everything. ( I have a still unsolved issue with adobe reader software not working from inside another app ( truefire music lessons) . it is all good on my other PCs, so I suspect this one has either some left over old adobe stuff or some security rules left over from an old install of cryptoprevent . but I cant find either... I have wiped out adobe both with their own tools and with revo, and rebooted then reinstalled but no fix) Last edited by cybmole; 08-18-2015 at 01:36 AM. |

Some tools, like revo, will only clean up an install that still exists, so they cannot fix this calibre issue. But reinstalling the old missing version that windows is looking for, then removing it will work
