need help on 2 items please.
1. While I was in the ENABLE_DIAGS utilities trying to ssh into my kindle PW 5.3, I accidentally touched the Format User Partition option (so something formatted :/ ). After failing to SSH into the kindle, I tried to reboot by Disable Diags but received the error "Cound not mount/access customer partition. I'd like to get back to the main kindle OS. 2. I need help with SSH using Putty in Windows. (tried to follow https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle4NTHacking#SSH.3F and failed) Windows seemed to install all the drivers fine (I'd like to mention that I've connected to another Kindle NT before). I've configured the network interface IP 192.168.15.201 as in step5 and tried Putty to 192.168.15.244 port 22. I am getting "Connection refused" error. |

First: Why are you following a guide for a different device than you actually have?
as for 2.: your Kindle might not be running an SSH daemon. Did you install the Rescue pack? Otherwise, there just is no SSH daemon you could connect to. |

I followed the jailbreak guide (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=198446). It was my understanding that the rescue pack was installed.

That sounds good. Can you ping the Kindle?
Chances are, however, that formatting the user partition also scrapped the ENABLE_DIAGS file - or rather that by blanking the full user partition it can't even be evaluated if it is there, so the device might be failing at an even earlier step. I don't have much experience messing with a KPW in such a state - maybe others can give better suggestions. |

Looks very good indeed. How do you put it into USB mass storage mode? Via Diags menu?

yes Diags menu, option U.
I hope I can find a way out of this Diags menu and everything will boot normally. |

And then carefully following the information at the link you posted. PS: You **did not** reformat the system from the root directory (/) - You only formated the **Customer Partition** (exported as USB storage), known internally as the /mnt/us/* sub-tree. |

I'm not sure how to start over by installing the Amazon 5.3.1 firmware image. can you please guide me in the right direction?
I can't seem to exit from the Diags screen nor can I SSH into the device with putty. |

Put it back into USB storage mode, and download http://kindle.s3.amazonaws.com/update_kindle_5.3.1.bin to the USB drive. Put it out of USB drive mode.
Then reboot, and hope that the updater kicks in before actually booting into diags. If all else fails and you still end up in diags, try enabling USB network, but with the cable DETACHED. Wait for 20 seconds, then plug in the cable - and hope that you can SSH into diags. If you installed the rescue pack, then yes, toggling usbnetwork should enable an SSH server as well. But for some reasons, this seems to work unreliably when the cable is attached (well, at least that's often, but not always, the case for usbnetwork in main mode - so it might also happen in diags). |

the bin worked and kicked in before Diags. I am back in the OS. Whew.
Now do I need to jailbreak it again? |

I believe I just found out myself. The device updated itself so I reinstalled the image again and followed the JB thread. Thanks everyone for helping.
Now on to breaking the PW some more! |
