Removing books from library

I want to remove books from the library, but do not want to delete them from my computer. I'm sure this must be possible, but I can't find how to do it

As a complete newcomer to Calibre, I'm hoping this will allow me to load a series - such as the Sharpe novels, or Patricia Cornwell books into my PRS 1T - something that was easy with the 505.

Sorry if this has been answered already, but I can't find any info.
Thanks
John

1st question: Why do it this way? Space for the entry is minimal.

Create a custom column to indicate your desired status (Most people choose 'Read' ), then you can make a filter (ex.#read:false) to hide those items from view.

I've got quite a few pdf & .lit docs in the library which I don't want there, but don't want them deleting from my PC.

What I've done is copy the original docs to a pen drive and then deleted from the library, then restoring from the pen drive. I just thought there must be an easier way, which I was missing....

You CAN delete a specific format of a book:
Right click on a title and select your Delete option
Or
Open the Metadata Editor: Delete it from the formats pane

OR

Multi-select a group of books and use the Right-click option on the delete icon

I'm afraid I don't undestand what exactly do you want.

To remove format from Calibre, but have the files in some other folder outside Calibre - just use 'Save to disk' before deleting that format.

Same goes, if you want to delete every trace of the book - save the files to disk and delete the book. Only then Calibre will forget all about it, so what's the point? As theducks said, much easier to use custom columns.

I also can't understand why you would copy them back after deleting them.

Are you trying to prevent them from going on reader?

Preferences>plugins>device interface plugins>Sony PRS T1 and Newer will let you choose what formats get sent to reader. I just send epub to mine.

Other than that I am at a loss.

Let me try and explain again
I imported books/docs from a folder and sub-folders not realising that it also included some pdf and lit files. I'm not interested in the lit files, but some of the pdf files relate to research and published scientific papers which I have no wish to include in Calibre in case I inadvertantly change or delete them. I have backups of these files and I know I can filter them so they don't show, but all I wanted to do is remove them from the calibre library, without permanently deleting them from the hard drive.

I want to keep them in the original folder/sub folders for archival reasons, hence the reason for copying them back after deleting from Calibre.

What I thought would be a simple question, turns out to be more difficult than I first thought

Thanks for all the help

John

calibre will not delete them from the original folder unless it is a calibre folder used for auto adding books.
