Kindle 3 - Browser not loading fully

Hi.
Had my Kindle 3 (Keyboard) about a month now and loving it, that is until this morning.

I use the browser extensively to find references so it is very important to me, but suddenly this morning after a few hours work, the pages stopped loading fully, and with the text 'bitty' and all images, what I can only describe as loading as '8 bit images' rather than greyscale I started to try to fix it.

All I could think of was...
1). Clearing the browser history.
2). Clearing the the cookies.
3). Turn on, off JavaScript.
4). Turn off/on the Kindle.

** By the way, I am using my home wireless connection, and have used G3 too, both with the same result.

All to no avail.

Additionally, my first thought was that the browser was not downloading all the data... has been proven incorrect, as oddly, while the browser is open, when I hit the 'Menu button' and its context menu appears, though partially covered, the browser displays in greyscale perfectly! :O

So I am at a loss, it is downloading all the data, can display in greyscale but for reasons unknown does not.

Can I reset, should I try and if so, how do I go about it?
Otherwise I guess, my only option is to return it to Waitross (John Lewis) as it is still with the one year guarantee period.

Forgot to mention, outside the browser, the screen displays in perfect greyscale.

God bless.
Karl.

PS...

Reboot the Kindle (ie hold the power switch in for 20s until the screen flashes white).

I agree with Harry, a restart is in order. If that doesn't work you can contact Kindle Support.

If you are in the US, the number for Amazon Kindle customer service is (1-866-321-8851)

Thanks for the advice, I'll remember it if it happens again. Thing is, about three hours later... just as mysteriously as it went wrong, it started working again! Ghost in the machine or what!

God bless... Karl.

You should still reboot your Kindle. You'll lose nothing by doing so, and memory does get fragmented, etc, over time. The occasional reboot is good practice.

Kindles do occasionally reboot themselves if they detect out-of-memory or other error conditions. That may have happened in your case.

Yes... I've noticed the screen go white on it's own, more than once. Additionally, having left the Kindle on charge all night.. last night, I awoke to discover it still displayed an orange light, thus had not charged. The plug was warm, I rebooted... wiggled the cable a little and now it is charging!

I purchased my Kindle from Waitross, owned by 'John Lewis'. To my surprise, the Waitross staff and a member of 'John Lewis' we contacted via phone... the Kindle appears to be the only item that they only offer a one year guarantee with. 'John Lewis' is renown for giving customers a free two-year guarantee on all their electronic products, that is why we all found it so odd regarding, the Kindle g3.

I'm just wondering, with the 8 bit display and the unit not charging, as well as a few other oddities in the last month from purchase, if the Kindle Keyboard is prone to a short life expectancy?

No, the Kindle certainly isn't prone to a short life expectancy. What's the relevance of the "8 bit display" to your question?

@Karlos-Fandango: What do you mean by "8 bit display" and "8 bit images"?

The eink kindles all have a 4-bit display giving 16 shades of gray. Even the K4 and K5 that have an 8-bit framebuffer require that the bottom 4-bits of each framebuffer byte must be a copy of the top 4-bits, so the eink hardware only displays 4-bit values. Up to 256 perceived gray values are done using dithering of 4-bit shades of gray.

A true 8-bit display could display 256 shades of gray without requiring any dithering. So what you describe could mean that your kindle has BETTER display quality than a normal eink kindle. But the tone of your first post feels like you mean that the quality is WORSE than a normal display, so perhaps what you meant to say was that it looks like a "1-bit display".

Please clarify your statement with CORRECT technical terminology. Thanks.

@Geekmaster.
Yes, you've got it... maybe I was wrong saying 8-bit, but yes it was worse... had no greyscale at all. All the text had jagged edges (no dithering)... both text and images were either totally black or... the background screen colour.

All is working fine at the moment, I'm using it constantly... really pleased with it.
