This may be the longest self-published book I've seen. Over 1500 pages! Billed as historical fiction with romance in a playful sense. Writing does seem competent but still 1555 pages?! For the truly brave.

Edmund Persuader by Stuart Shotwell
http://www.amazon.com/Edmund-Persuad...mund+persuader

Quote:
"An epic, a romance, and a mystery, Edmund Persuader is the tale of a man both blessed and cursed by his powers of persuasion. Those powers seem to perform the greatest wonders when they work him ill, yet fail when he needs them most-until he can emerge from the depths of moral error and climb toward the exaltation of redeeming love."

The White Lord of Wellesbourne by Kathryn Le Veque. I don't recall this being free before but since it's medieval romance perhaps I missed it. Strangely few reviews for a prolific author. She says this title is her favorite. Maybe her best? Sort of self published in 2006?
http://www.amazon.com/The-White-Lord...f+wellesbourne

Quote:
1485 A.D. – Adam Wellesbourne and his four sons – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – comprise the most feared House in the service of Richard III. Adam’s eldest son, Matthew, has earned such an influential reputation that throughout England he is known as The White Lord of Wellesbourne. Upon the eve of the Battle of Bosworth field, Matthew finds himself forced into a contract marriage that he has been avoiding for ten years. He has no desire to wed the Lady Alixandrea Terrington St. Ave, but his father is insistent. The lady comes with a dowry of 400 fighting men, most important in these warring times. But a strange thing happens to Matthew the moment he meets his future bride; he is actually attracted to her. The Lady Alixandrea is beautiful, intelligent, and kind. But she is also unknowingly caught up in a deadly game of politics. Suddenly, a simple marriage becomes a deadly happenstance. As forces for both King Richard and Henry Tudor build towards the battle that will decide the future of England, Matthew is distracted by the woman he never wanted to marry. In this world where the politics of rival men vying for the throne control the fortunes of a nation, The White Lord of Wellesbourne is torn between the unexpected life he never thought to have and the warring life that he’d always known to be. Will lovely Alixandrea win him or will King Richard?

Another self pub for those interested in historical fiction/fantasy.

The Grain God (The Grain God Trilogy) by Susan Shepherd
http://www.amazon.com/The-Grain-God-...=the+grain+god

Quote:
He is the most feared and elusive assassin of the 17th century B.C. Mediterranean world, known as Rush because of the swiftness and stealth with which he overwhelms his victims. When they are found in the morning they wear a mark carved under their left eye which comes to be known as the Tear of the Bull—the Mark of the Assassin. Having learned the arts of war and murder as a highly successful Hittite soldier and commander, Rush uses that knowledge as an assassin and then multiplies his riches through trade under the guise of Ameg the Merchant, a foppish Mycenaean businessman. As Ameg his travels and dealings with the seats of power and wealth throughout the Mediterranean enable him to gather the intelligence needs as an assassin.

Rush is the master of his world until, in the spring of 1620 B.C., he is hired by the King of Cyrus, the Southern Kingdom of Minoan Crete, to kill the sixteen year old slave boy newly proclaimed the Grain God of Knossos, the rival Northern Kingdom.

He considers it an easy contract. But when he attempts to take the boy’s life he finds himself captivated by the lad's animal beauty, grace and oddity. This momentary faltering allows the boy, a fantastic athlete himself, to escape. But Rush is hounded by his sudden, solitary failure and he becomes obsessed with it, and tortured by the knowledge that if not he, another assassin wil be hired to kill him, before the boy is sacrificed, like his predecessors, to Rah. To further complicate matters the volcano on the Island of Thera, ninety miles north of the Minoan Empire, has begun to steam. Rush alone knows Crete itself is doomed. What he does not know is that the eruption of Thera will be the greatest natural catastrophy in known human history.

Bad Guys (a Gibbons and Tozzi book) by Anthony Bruno. The first in the series is free again today. Originally published in 1988 by Putnam/Delacorte and Dell.

LJ's review
Quote:
After Mike Tozzi assassinates three bad guys who have escaped law, the Manhattan FBI office sends Tozzi's retired partner, Bert Gibbons, to locate the renegade agent and "neutralize" him. Tozzi converts Gibbons, however, and the two subsequently search for a double agent in the FBI office. With the traitor's aid, a Mafia crook has built up a successful narcotics ring and has executed several FBI agents. First novelist Bruno effectively infuses his work with a grimy, ruthless immediacy and serious tone well suited to thugs and undercover agents. Deeply involving, but fraught with profanity, explicit sex, and gory violence.
