Anne Rice Talks About Her New Werewolf Book

This week's Geeks Guide to the Galaxy podcast is an interview with Anne Rice. Her new book is a return to supernatural/monster fiction after a decade of Christian fiction (she's also left the Catholic church and spoken out against organized religion in recent years). I gobbled up nearly all of her books as a teen, but haven't read anything from this millennium.

She and the interviewer also agree that her werewolf is a superhero of sorts, rather than a tortured or conflicted monster like many of her vampires.

I remember when she used to post on the Kindle Forum on Amazon. She seemed like a pretty nice lady and she was really interested in the emerging digital book technology and issues. I've never known what to make of her - I guess I'll call it spiritual quest for truth. She's one way, she's another.

She's a good storyteller though.

I loved her vampire books, the Mayfair Witches series, The Mummy, and even her risque books written under pseudonyms. I tried reading The Wolf Gift, and... the magic of her earlier books just wasn't there anymore (for me).

I loved most of her vampire series, but as she got more & more into the religious deep end I lost interest. Then with her schizo feelings about religion, I have no more interest in reading her books.

There's a fine line between genius & insanity, and she tends to fall off the wire!

I doubt I would enjoy any of her books if I picked them up now, but more due to changes in my reading than her writing. A lot of authors I read voraciously as a teen seem dull as paint now.

At the time, her two non-monster historical novels were my favorites: Feast of All Saints and Cry to Heaven.

I love the way Anne Rice writes! I also like the subject matter -- vampires, witches, ghosts, mummies, sexually promiscuous girls, and now werewolves. I stopped reading her when she found religion, but I'll give the new werewolf book a shot.
