Unhappy how do i get the ebook folders on my pc transfered to my kindle 2

hello!
for several weeks now i have been searching for a way to get the ebook folders i have already set up on my pc transferred to my kindle. i found a program called kollections or some such and have YET to get it to run let alone do what it says it's supposed to do.

i always have my ebooks on my pc set up in folders & really who wants to transfer 2 gb of books to a kindle and then one by one put them in "collections" ?
it's unbearably frustrating! this is the ONLY gripe i have for my kindle. else? it's an AWESOME piece of tech.

kinda tried with calibre and it's supposed addon to get the folders to kindle..yeah..that didn't work so well. calibre annoys the dickens out of me to begin with.

so any idea's of programs that'll do this for me? even the kindle for pc is a pain in the arse.

thanks everyone!

PS: i have been researching this and maybe i'm not asking the right questions but i am at my wits end. it's making my teeth itch!!

There should be no problem copying your folder setup onto your Kindle 2, just put them all under the documents folder. However, the Kindle then flattens (i.e. ignores) the folder structure.

To get back collections in place of folders, I suggest using Calibre's Kindle Collections plugin. You can use this to edit collections on your Kindle with a GUI without needing to use Calibre to store or manage your books.

Azri,

Just to be clear: These are Kindle books that you are talking about - that is, books purchased and downloaded from the Amazon Kindle store?

If they are, then it is not enough to transfer them directly from the PC to the Kindle. You will either have to re-download them directly from the Kindle; or download them again to the PC, and, when you do so, specify that they are to be read on the Kindle. That's because the physical file that holds the book can only be read on the device which you originally downloaded it for.

If these are not Kindle books, or if they are DRM-free, then the above does not apply. Of course, they will need to be converted to a format the the Kindle can understand, but I assume you are familiar with those issues.

I know this doesn't answer your original question, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Just to confirm, is you're K2 is running the updated firmwave. The original K2 doesn't support Collections.

Mike L: em, i have kindle books i bought from amazon, i have pdf files, text files<--mostly really good fanfic from various fandoms .

dwig: yepper, kindle 2 with latest update, i can go through, make collections and add 1 bloody book/file at a time, i send em to collections. problem is i have arthritis and typing on the kindle is a misery, where as my pc keyboard is less of a nightmare. i want to be able to use the file folders i've already got in place on my pc. the time it would take to go through all my ebook files on my kindle, 1 at a time to add to various "collections" is just ridiculous.
i plan to muck about with calibre a bit more and see if i can't get the job done that way.

you'd think amazon would make this a part of the kindles from the gitgo.<-- the ability to transfer ebooks from pc to the kindle folders and all.
thanks for your time,
Azri

ok, here is the issue, i go to download calibre, for the kindle plugin to work it says, in this very forum, it needs to be calibre version 0.8.6. or later. so every time i try to find that version? it either won't download, won't open correctly..etc etc.

i tried the kindle plug in with an earlier version and wow..what a waste of time. so can someone point me to an actual, 0.8.6 version or later, of calibre that can be completely downloaded so i can TRY to get this to work? please? every time i do a web search via various search engines i get maybe 0.8.4 version.

amazing how it's the small stuff that makes ya crazy isn't it? *L*

gonna do one more search and one more download...just to see....

Something seems a bit strange. As of day before yesterday when I downloaded it and still just a few minutes ago, the highest version of Calibre available is 0.8.44.

0.8.44 is the most recent version and what you want. 6 comes before 44, 0.8.6 was 38 versions ago.

OOOhhhh! I just now looked at the Calibre plugin selection page that includes Kindle Collections and it does, in fact, say Calibre v. 0.8.6 You were totally right in seeing what you saw. Problem was: what you saw has to be wrong. Go ahead and make your installation, if you want to, of the plugin, regardless of the stupid stated version number. It does work.

ok redownloaded calibre and the plugin, installed it...here's where the problems start

when i go to run the plugin it gives me 3 options
"1.show books in main memory of device,
2. eject this device &
3. configure this device"...

whereas the instructions for a first time running say

"Select Customize to choose which collections to create from Calibre (set the Action column to "Create")"

i do not see this option ANYWHERE! so..i must be doing something wrong.

methinks I'll uninstall calibre, clean my registry and clear files out, then reinstall and see if that doesn't do the job. ...wish me luck..I'm goin in...

That's the Device Icon. You have to add the Collection plugin to the toolbar. Go into Preferences>Toolbar and chose "Main toolbar when device is connected" and move the Kindle Collection icon from left to right. The icon will only be visible when the kindle is plugged in.

No need to uninstall anything
