Some Advice Please :)
Hey everyone!
I bought my shiny white PRS T1 yesterday and with it entered the world of ereading! I thought it was going to be pretty straight forward however I think I may have been a little optimistic! I was wondering if I can get some general advice on a few things to help me on my way? I am a little confused about all the different types of formats which is partly the reason I stayed away from the Kindle (I know things can be converted but I didnt want the hastle), but I now think that its essential to be able to pull books from different formats. Can you buy books from american ebook sites and put them on a UK kindle? There is a few books I have found which are not available in the UK but have found then in certain US stores? The book in question is Close to Shore by Michael Capuzzo. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this? Finally for now!!, where do people tend to get their books from? I want to broaden my range of reading as I am a primarily a crime and thriller reader but am open to reading anything now I have my reader!! Thanks for your time, Mike |

I'm slightly confused, Mike. You've bought a Sony PRS-T1, but you're asking if you can put books on a Kindle?

First, congratulations on your PRS-T1, nice piece of hardware. Secondly, welcome to Mobileread.
Third, yes you can buy from other vendors in the US, but you can't buy from Amazon unless you want to enter the world of Apprentice Alf and Calibre. In other words, you will need to be willing to put time and effort into format changing. If you want to stay away from that make sure that your thrillers and mysteries are available as epub formatted books. There is a whole Wiki on MR that explains this in excellent detail and language. |

First thing you need to do is download adobe digital editions to your pc and install it and authorise your computer, then after you should be able to authorise your reader for DRM using the reader software it came with.
(I only mention this because it took me about 2 days to work out if you have done it already ignore me) Then you should theoretically be able to read any .epub you buy anywhere. Hopefully the Sony UK store opens soon and simplify's things until then Waterstones seems like the best option to me personally. |

Well, if you want to buy from Amazon with the T1 without messing with the files, you can.
But first you need to root the T1. (Check the Sony Forun for the process and the files. It is almost trivial.) Once you root the T1 you can install the Kindle reader for Android and the T1 will be able to access the local Kindle store. Works quite well, actually. |

Mike,
The Sony bookstore is only available to people in the US (and probably Canada, too). Many eBooks have what are called "geographical restrictions"; the bookstore is only allowed to sell them to people in certain countries. Unfortunately that means that there are eBooks that are available in the US but not in the UK (and vice versa, of course). You can buy books from your Sony at any bookstore which sells books in "ePub" format (except Apple - they use a different type of encryption system). You might try "kobo" - they're a good international seller. |

Waterstones also sells in ePub format in the UK, as does WH Smith. I've not bought from Smith, but I've had good experiences with Waterstones and Kobo.

Yes, Waterstones is about the best UK ePub store - they are who are I buy from when, as sometimes happens, Amazon UK don't have a book, but they do. The original poster, though, was after a US bookstore because he wants a book which is apparently not available in the UK.

Also consider sources of eBooks that are not DRM infested. For example, all eBooks from Baen publishing are DRM free and available in a wide variety of formats, including ePub. (www.baenebooks.com. Baen publishes fantasy and science fiction, with a good deal of it being military sf. They also have a LOT of books available completely free at the Baen Free Library. A great way to check out an author and see if you want more from her/him.
