Authorisation - wondering if this was a good idea…

Hey guys, I’ve picked up my fiancèe a PRS-T1 for Christmas so she can read Swedish epub books from http://www.dito.se/. At the moment I’ve got a few books purchased from there in Sony’s Reader software on my work computer, but they don’t want to transfer to the reader device. I’m assuming I need to make the device ‘Authorized’, but whenever I click on the button it drops me back into the Reader software with no further option. The help file says that I should buy a book through the Reader software which will prompt me to log into an Adobe account (?) but I’m loathe to buy more content just to get the books I’ve already purchased working. I’ve updated to the latest Reader software and device firmware. So it boils down to:

1) How can I get my device authorised to sync the books I’ve bought onto it.
2) Is this even a good idea with my work computer? Do I want to be doing this on my home laptop?
3) Would it just be easier to use Calibre and strip the DRM?

I’m a newbie to ebooks, go easy on me

OK,first off, don't do anything hasty to your work computer.

Do you have an Adobe ID, and have you authorised your work computer using your Adobe ID?

If you haven't, those books on your work computer are only authorised for that particular installation on your computer. You won't be able to get them to work with anything else, and if that installation goes away (e.g. replacement machine/reinstall of system software) then you'll have permanently lost access to your ebooks. In this case, the only way you're going to be able to keep those books and read them on other devices is to remove the DRM. Apprentice Alf can help you there (google for his blog), but we can't give detailed DRM removal instructions here.

But hopefully you do have your work machine registered with your Adobe ID. You just need to do the same with the PRS-T1. But since it's for your fiancèe, perhaps it would be better to set her up with her own Adobe ID, and authorise the PRS-T1 to that. Of course, you then won't be able to use the ebooks from your work machine on it. (Unless, of course, you remove the DRM.)

Personally, I strip the DRM from any ebooks I buy. It's just too much hassle.

Nope, no Adobe ID set up here. I believe my fiancèe’s got one (she uses Kuler) but it might email her if I add her which would be a shame? Guess I’m going down the DRM stripping route then for these books, I can get it set up after Christmas properly. I’ll look for Apprentice Alf’s blog, thanks!

Downloaded Calibre, loaded them on. Was it really that simple? Thanks!

And Robin, If you're in Sweden or have family/friends there (here) with a library card, don't forget to check out your local library! Swedsih eLibrary has no waiting time, you can check out the book whenever you want it.

The books from Dito are watermarked instead of using DRM so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Many new Swedish books are available at the eLibrary same day as they are released in book stores! For example the Zlatan book, just to mention one.

Thanks Åsa (correct spelling? ), I’ll have a good look.

bjoky: that’s what I thought to but Reader didn’t want to transfer them.
