Copying mobi file info from disc to excel
![]() hi My Dad has just been given a CD of 4000 free books for his Kindle. I wanted to create a full list for him that's grouped by author (the disk is A-Z on book title). I thought I'd be able to look at the contents of the disk in my computer and copy the list and just paste in Excel but it just won't paste. I'm not great technically and I'm not sure if the data won't paste because of the .mobi file type or if it's a restriction on the disc. Any help much appreciated as I really don't want to manually type a list of 4000 books!!! Thanks |

I'm not sure what you're trying to copy, but if you want to get the directory of the CD into excel, just open a command prompt window and list the directory using the "dir" command. Then copy and paste it from the command window.
Or better still, redirect the output of "dir" to a text file like so: Code:
dir d:\ >directory.txt HTH |

A somewhat unrelated warning - many of these CDs of "free" books are pirated; please do ensure that these really are public domain books and not pirated material.

Thanks st_albert, that's exactly what I needed. I've now got the full list in Excel so can start splitting the fields and sort by author A-Z rather than title A-Z. Much appreciated.
Thanks HarryT. I didn't know this was an issue, not sure how you establish if they're pirate or not. Have to get my dad to check with the person who gave him the CD. Thanks again both, help is much appreciated. |

Simply check to see if they are by living authors, or authors who have died more recently than 70 years ago. If they are all "classics" - Dickens, Eliot, Austen, etc - that's fine, but if you find Harry Potter, Twilight, Stephen King, etc, in there, it's illegal.
