Device shows more than one copy of book

My Kindle Fire is plugged into my Mac. When I tell Calibre to show me the items on my device, why does it show that there are two or more of some titles on the device? How do I fix this?

Select: Remove from device: (optionally, sort and adjust ticks to only remove certain versions)
Dups could be 2 formats, newer version with slight metadata variation.
You need to determine what to remove.
WARNING Bulk ( or doing the one you are reading) removal may lose reading position or annotations.

Try and figure what you are doing wrong and STOP doing that in the future
