Dead kindle salvage

So after a year and a day, my kindle broke. Nothing easily fixable, the display is damaged due to having something rather heavy dropped onto it (only the bottom ~30% works, the rest retains a cracked image of the wallpaper and strong vertical lines of black and white).

Onwards and upwards as they say. I've purchased and set up my replacement already, this isn't a cry thread.

Just wondering if there's anything worth salvaging from the dead kindle...

The battery comes to mind first. I would also keep the usb port and all the switches if you are handy with small electronics.

Edit: Just noticed, the 3G radio should be in a socket. I would keep that too.

Recently on a book-oriented forum that I frequent, a member who was studying bookbinding wondered if their hobby was being driven into obsolescence by ebooks, and I facetiously posted a link to a website with instructions for making a Kindle case out of an old hardback.

Another poster topped that by suggesting making a book cover out of an old Kindle.

I can't help thinking it would be an interesting exercise.

You could talk to Kindle Customer Service, tell them what happened, and see what they can do for you. You might get a discounted refurbished replacement.

I'm probably going to put mine up on EBAY. If you look at the completed auctions you can expect to get about $30 out of a cracked screen Kindle.
