Email for anything BUT Kindle?

Does any ereader device other than the Kindle allow you to send personal files to it wirelessly? I know, you can always check an email account from a web browser, but that's very manual. It seems Kindle, for all its other faults, is the only ereader that allows an easy method of wirelessly getting news and blogs and such that don't need to be routed through the corporate paysystem.

Kobo has periodicals, and Nook has periodicals, but you pay for them. I use Calibre to automatically email downloaded periodicals every day, as I'm sure many of the rest of you do. Why is that a feature that is not talked about as a unique aspect of the Kindle? If it's not unique, why does nobody talk about it for any OTHER device but the Kindle?

Anyway, future purchases and all that jazz - I really really like that option because wires are so inconvenient. :-)

Many people make use of the Calibre content server (or one of the alternatives) if their reader device supports a WiFi or 3G connection and has a browser. I know that is how I often load books onto my Sony PRS-950 over a network connection.

Which leads me back to the "automatic" nature of the email content server, as contrasted with the "I can use a browser" manual nature of the others.

For books, which last me some hours to days, I can see that there is little inconvenience from using the browser on the reader. For blogs, which may only consume a few minutes at a time, manually downloading them one-by-one is something I'd wager would get very old.

In this forum people talk about How to email to the Kindle all of the time. Why no one talks more about this feature as an added plus for the Kindle is because this is the Calibre forum. As you noted above this isn't properly a Calibre question, you might want to try the Which one should I buy sub-forum for discussing various ereader features.

I understand it's not specifically a Calibre question, except insofar as Calibre is used to email things, and is there ANY other reader that you would email to?

My understanding is that the calibre books go to a kindle (Amazon) email account which then transfers them to the reader.

If your reader allows you to read emaila nd download attachments then you can email them to the reader. They will not be put in the right directory automatically as they are for the kindle.

So, then...no. No other ereaders besides Kindle allow you to automatically send personal documents to them.

AFAIK The kindle does not eceive these emails either. They go through Amazon which then places them on your reader. Amazon has pretty much total control of your kindle when it is online.

As mentioned by itimpi the calibre content server is an easy way to accomplish the same thing on most devices. Plus it will not invade your privacy. And it is kind of neat as well

You're right that it all goes through Amazon, but the end result to the user is "automatic document transmission to the device" and not "manually browse and search to get documents if you think to" - it's curious that nobody but Kindle allows it.

I get your argument about invasion of privacy and all that jazz - I'm a big EFF supporter. But, when I think of ereaders for my less-techy relatives, I don't try to convert them to the Richard Stallman philosophy before I show them how to read their books.

In what way does me sending a document to my own Kindle "invade my privacy"? I'm the one who's doing the sending!

Perhaps it doesn't. I am assuming that the unique tether referred to in this article http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/te.../18amazon.html
applies to anything Amazon sends to the kindle.

Amazon neither knows nor cares what personal documents you send to your Kindle. I'm afraid I'm somewhat at a loss to understand what "invasion of privacy" issues are involved here at all. Apologies if I'm being more than usually dense.

I don't disagree with you, I just see potential for abuse. If amazon can do it, it is probably a matter of time before others can as well.
Why would they bother? Because they can.

It would not stop me from buying a kindle if I really wanted one. I bought my mother one, and even emailed an ebook to it. Still I am kind of glad she prefers to keep her wireless turned off. Not totally paranoid, but just a smidgeon

I sent Harry Potter PDF's (I will be buying them in October but wanted to re-read before the last movie and there is no way in hell I am lifting those massive books again) to my Kindle using the email feature. No problems.
