One that supports basic email
If anyone wants to help here, I'd be grateful.
I live in France and want an ereader. Harry has told me if I get Kindle it must come from the US, which is fine. He has also told me that Kindle is an ebook reader and not for emails also. (the free access was so attractive). But since reading around this helpful site I, like others am confused for choice. If I want an ereader which can also support basic email sending and receiving, which is the cheapest cost of buying and contract? Can anyone even briefly suggest which product I should get? Thanks Edit....I see that there are Ipads for around 500$ US which do email and ereading. But thats a huge increase from a simple Kindle. Maybe I'm looking for too much? Mr Whippy, I think you must have misunderstood some points Harry did say.
How does your email program behave when it opens new mails? Does it open them in a separate window or in the existing one? In the first case you won't be able to use a Kindle to read emails because its browser can't open a new window. In the second it would be possible. As you're coming from France: have you thought of the Cybook Orizon? It has wifi and input. Maybe you can - if you're interested in this device - ask questions referring to its email capabilities in the Cybook subforum. |

Thanks Billi for your info. I dont know how my emails are opened - I'm just on hotmail.
I will follow up your kind info on the Cybook Orizon. It's obvious how much I don't know here - but we have to start somewhere.! Thanks! |

You slightly misunderstood me. I advised you that the Kindle has a basic web browser, not an e-mail client, so you will be able to use the Kindle's browser if it can support your mail provider's webmail interface.

Thanks Harry, I'm sure I misunderstood!
I looked at the cybook thingy but of course I want books in English. I read somewhere that MSN Hotmail works fine on Kindle which is why I thought I'd check with you guys here. Believe it or not, I'm moving forward! Many thanks to you and the folks on your forum! |

I've just tried to access hotmail on my Kindle, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to work - it just sits there with a blank screen and an endless "wait" cursor. The Kindle's web browser is very simple - it can't handle complex sites.

Thanks H
If you can't get a squeak out of Kindle +Hotmail, I can forget it! It seems I should go back to your original advice - Kindle is for reading books. I cant afford a device which gives me email and e-reading + contract, so I think I'll end up with a standard Kindle, and just read books. Valuable help - keep up the good work... |

I'm not a user of Hotmail, but it seems there is:
http://loginwindowslivehotmailsignin...eb-browser.htm Anyone with experience who can try the above link's instructions on their Kindle (I have not thoroughly read the above, so apologies if it's not applicable)? Cheers, Marc |

If you're not opposed to reading on an LCD screen, there's always the Kindle Fire.
