can I buy books and store them on thumb drive?

I have family living on a boat. They have two Sony Readers aboard. Can I buy ebooks on the Sony store, download them to a thumb drive, and take them to the boat as a hostess gift? Thanks!

I'm going to assume they have some way of transferring books to their readers, like a small netbook or laptop on board with them. If they do, they can easily transfer the book from the thumb drive to their readers. So in that instance, yes it would work well and I think be a nice gift.

If they don't have a laptop available, it might then be better to put the ebooks on an SD card that they could just insert into their readers as long as they don't have the PRS-350s (no expansion slot on those). I don't have a 650/950, but I'm assuming there's a way to transfer books from the SD card to the internal memory of the reader? Someone correct me if that's not possible to do.

Unless their readers are authorized to your Sony account the DRM won't let you do what you're suggesting.

I never thought about the DRM issue because I've never yet bought one DRM'd book. So yes, that would be a major consideration I didn't think of.

If they are sharing an Adobe ADE account, you can register a netbook to that account and buy books on their license.

Or you can remove the DRM.

Okay, thanks, got it (I think). I have previously bought books for them when they have internet access and can take delivery, which entails getting their log-on information and essentially taking over the account for a time. I guess I can do that again, then download the books to thumb drive, and thereby get around the DRM.

(Yes, they are very well outfitted with laptops and netbooks as well as Sony Readers!)

That won't work because they don't have internet access on the boat. I have to carry the books next to my heart.

If their reader is authorized on your copy of Reader app, then any book you download, you will be able to put on a thumb drive and copy to their reader on the boat.

Better yet, use a USB adapter that accepts an SD card. That way, you can just hand them the SD card and they can slap it straight into the reader (non 3** models anyway)
