Will Mobipocket win the DRM wars?
Now that the Kindle and the Cybook Gen 3 are coming out, has Mobipocket gained enough momentum to win the DRM wars? Will it become the default ebook format?

I reckon it already is the de facto DRM standard. It's certainly the format used by the most eBook retailers.

Pardon the typo in the poll - is there any way to edit the poll?

It needs another option - "DRM will die soon".

The problem with ebooks, is that you don't have the critical mass that is chipping away at DRM in the music industry.
Book piracy just hasn't hurt the book industry the same way piracy has hurt the music industry. Without getting into a long debate, piracy of music is happening because music is over-priced and is riddled with DRM. That makes pirated tracks attractive to good people who would be willing to spend a reasonable amount of money on an un-DRMed track. I just don't see these same pressures on the book industry. What forces are out there to prompt publishers from un-DRMing ebooks if the vast majority of people who don't like DRM still buy the print versions? |
