Too many covers

Help - my covers are multiplying! I have 3 (identical) covers for most of my books. This didn't used to be the case, and I don't know how it happened. I have also noticed that newly downloaded books have 3 covers, so I have an ongoing problem. I have had a look in the preferences but can't see anything which relates. Does anybody have any idea how I can stop them breeding?

I am identifying and deleting the surplus covers through the library maintenance facility, checking the integrity of the database and then deleting the highlighted additional files listed under 'Unknown files in books'. As I have nearly 3000 books, each with 2 additional covers, it is a very tedious job to check a box for each one of them. It doesn't appear possible to hold down the shift button so I can check multiple boxes. Is there a more efficient way to delete these additional covers. They are taking up precious space in my Dropbox storage.

Thank you for any ideas.

This is strange! There should be a single file called cover.jpg stored by Calibre with each book. What are these additional files called?

Each folder has a filed called:

cover.jpg (which is the file left when I delete additional files through Calibre's library management facility)
title.jpg (where title is the title of the book)
title_resizedcover.jpg

Those files are not being created by baseline calibre. Are you using some other tool? Or perhaps a plugin to manipulate or create covers?

It occurred to me just after my last post that plugins may be responsible for this. I have added: Count Pages, Reading List, Add to User, Walk Search History, Search the Internet and Quality Check.

Looking through them, I wonder if the last is causing my problems. I have removed it and added two books which don't seem to have acquired additional covers, though I will keep an eye on them!

I am probably not using the plug in correctly and will ask some questions in the plug in thread. Thanks for the replies, they helped in thinking through the problem.

Now if anybody can come up with an efficient way to remove all the additional files, I would be grateful!

None of my plugins (includes all those you list) create additional files within the Calibre library folders, nor anything with those filenames.

The names of the files tells me that those extra jpg files have been generated by Calibre2opds when you have used it to generate a catalog for your library. One is the image for the thumbail views when listing books and the other a cover resized to the size set in the calibre2opds configuration parameters. They are stored with the book so that they do not need regerneating every time you regenerate the catalog.

If you no longer want your calibre2opds catalog then you can remove them. I need to check, but I also think there may be combination of parameter settings that may stop them being generated and make calibre2opds use the existing cover image.

In most cases these files are small so the overhead is minimal.

To remove them you could simpy search the calibre library for .jpg files, sort those into order and then delete the ones that are not called cover.jpg.

Thanks Itimpi - I have been generating an opds catalog. It would be useful to use the existing cover image. Although each image is small by itself, and additional 5000 adds to the file size - especially when I am trying to keep within my free space on dropbox.

Thanks kiwidude for the info.

On checking, it appears that I was wrong about there being a calibre2opds configuration option to use the existing cover.jpg files for thumbnails and/or cover images. I will get appropriate options added for a future release.

Thanks -I think I can generate the catalog without thumbnails, and I think I'll do that for now.

Thanks for all your help.

Also, unless you need both variants make sure that you are not generating both the OPDS (XML) and HTML versions of the catalog.
