Nested or enclosed series
Sometimes a series may be released as part of a larger grouping of books, that may or not be by the same author. For example there may be mutiple trillogies/short stories/etc set in the same story universe.
Currently I use a custom series collumn called 'Realm' which works for that pupose. I've read this is doable with tags, but that seems not sortable. for example to incorporate a chronological sort order. Does anyone else have better/different suggestions? Kludges or elegant solutions all welcome ![]() |

I've created a secondary series column to accomodate this, I also have a secondary tags column for my own personal tags, I use Anthology as the tag for those types of books.

The two major nestable series I have are Dragon Lance and Forgotten Realms. I use calibre's default series to list the realm and created a subseries column for the individual books. I use decimals to denote subseries within a subseries. Sorting doesn't seem to be a problem although the use of a column called Realm sounds attractive. In my case, I probably wouldn't do so because I have so many little used columns, I have to let some go off screen in order to be able to use the the ones I use frequently.
I use anthology strictly for books that have more than one story. Sorting stories within anthologies by series and/or author is problematic. The easiest way I can think of would be to make empty books for each story but the empty books can not be directly linked to the anthology and, per another thread, it's not likely it ever will be possible to do so. The only other thing I can think of is to break the anthologies down into separate books (one story per book) while also keeping the original anthology intact. While it would work, it defeats one of the purposes of calibre (avoiding having to have duplicate books for sorting purposes, as would be required if using a folder/filename hierarchy) and would be a massive project I do not have time for right now. |

I have a number of series that have 'Cycles' within the series:
Foreigner, Darkover, Pern ... I tried Hierarchical (Darkover.Clingfire), but those does not behave as I would like on my file system only based device. darkover/clingfire darkover/freeamazon They show that way in the Tag Browser : |
