Question A few questions about library behavior

I have some questions about how the library and storage system would behave in the full sized eDGe, since I'm getting ready to purchase an SD card for it.
  1. Is there any instruction on the the easiest procedure to move library from internal flash storage onto the SD card; I know that boris mentioned it isn't very onerous; but if anyone can post or link a detailed version, it would be great.
  2. How would the library behave (when it's on the SD card), when the card accidentally gets removed, does it revert back to the internal storage by default? Any possible ill effects on the device?
  3. Is there any chance that the eDGe would support the newer sdxc standard, or would only the older standards be compatible?
  4. Would adding an SD card affect the the capacity for applications, or would that be limited only to the internal flash?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a quick link to info https://www.entourageedge.com/suppor...barticleid=134
If you search for moving the library you will find several posts as well.

The eDGe doesn't support SDXC cards as far as I know. I'm also not sure what happens if the SD card is removed if it has the Library on it (you can email techsupport@entourageedge.com to ask, though). Adding an SD card probably will have limited benefit for the capacity of applications, as their data storage usage is trivial compared to a library of ebooks, or a collection of MP3's and videos.

Thanks, boris and donna;

These are very helpful bits of information. I will act accordingly.

I'm curious what the pros and cons of moving the library to the SD card are. I know it will cause the library to be virtually limitless in size, but are there any other positives? Downsides?

One positive is that you can have interchangeable Libraries on an eDGe - either different subject areas or purposes, or to share among family members. In theory you could have the same Library on both an EE and a PE by simply moving a MicroSD (in a SD adapter) between the two.

The other positive will be when we get 2.2 and the ability to move apps to SD. 300 MB is not enough app space, most of the newer apps are over 10MB.

Yes, I also hope that eventually, upgrading to 3.0 will allow for direct access to android market itself.

In the mean time, I'm satisfied with downloading a few APKs only for some essential functions.

I can confirm that the library on an SD-card works fine. No problems with the library.
A disadvantage is that the 3 Gig internal store is no longer approachable. I had hoped that it would become available for the apps. I have requested this in the beginning and still hope that it will be available with a comming update.

So, no downsides, then? (Other than the cost of an SD card, that is.)

Boris, these two answers seem to be contradictory??? I'm really not being nitpicky, it is just that I've been wanting to clarify this for some time. (I've asked about it both on the forum and in a communication to Entourage (not tech support, though) but haven't received an answer that specifically addresses this.

My concern is this. If the library is migrated to the SD card with necessary program files, then I suspect the card is a one time migration. If it is migrated, with those critical operating files still on the internal drive, pointing to the SD card, then we should be able to use multiple SD cards (hence, multiple libraries). Does this make sense? If this is the case, then my next question is... Is the SD card hot swappable or does the EE need to be shut down to change the SD. If it needs to be shut down, it definitely makes it less convenient to have multiple libraries.

Perhaps an Entourage person can jump in here??? ... and make it clear?

Migrating to the SD card only migrates the *content* of the Library, nothing else (as far as I know). So, in theory if you don't have the SD card plugged in you would see an empty Library (or possibly some error message). The SD card should be hotswap-capable by using the "Dismount" long-tap popup menu, so I wouldn't expect a reboot to be necessary. Also, the migrate function does have the option of reversal, but you need to make sure your Library will fit within the 3 GB space available internally.

However, it would be great if someone from enTourage could give some definitive information here. I have 32 GB of music on my SD card so I can't migrate to the SD card to try any of this out...

Thanks Boris. That's the way I'd hoped it would work.... but....

... I don't think anyone here has tried the multiple library, hotswap thing. I just got a 16 gb card, but don't plan on playing with this until the holidays.... just too busy, now, and can't afford the distraction.

I am not sure that I understand you exectly, aidren and boris. English is not my native language. But this is what I did:
Unmounted SD-card. Library now shows 'There are no books in your library. Launch Storage in the drop-down in the upper left of your screen to explore your device for existing contents.'
Storage: Edge 'This folder is empty'
Then I did put in an other SD-card (from my TomTom) and the library shows the normal screen. No content of course, so I added a file to the (new) library. Works well, but my old tags were lost, so I had to create new ones.
After this test I changed the SD-cards again and I had back my old library.
I did not have to shut the device down en restart. All works well.
Hope this makes sence to you.

Thanks sjarrel. So it does seem that the eDGe works without the SD card, and manages multiple SD cards (with Libraries) just fine.
