Damaged files?
I recently converted my library from a PC to Mac. Lots of issues as a result, most of which I fixed, but I still have about 15 files that aren't working. They seem to be all PDFs and when I try to open them in Calibre they either won't load at all (says it is damaged or a file calibre can't recognize) or else the pages show up blank and in the right side of the PDF window where the TOC goes is a bunch of garbled characters.
I have most of them on my nook and they look fine. I tried deleting and redownloading into Calibre and the same thing keeps happening (either redownloading directly from the vendor or from ADE). They look fine in ADE and I can open then, scroll, etc. But as soon as they get into calibre they don't work. I have no idea why this is happening or what to do about it. I am thinking it s related to the move but it is possible this was occurring before and I just didn't notice. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks so much! |

Calibre's viewer cannot handle complex PDFs. The same limitations that surrounding converting PDFs apply to the viewer. Internally the viewer basically coverts everything you give it to EPUB.
It sounds like there is nothing wrong with the file or calibre it's just a set of PDFs calibre can't handle. |

These are basic ebooks, just text, no graphics or anything. Not sure why they would be acting differently than all the rest, but it would be great if that is all it is.
If I end up having to remove the books from my nook for some reason and reload them, will they still work? The only related issue is that two of the books won't even load at all. Again, they look fine in ADE, but I can't even get into them. It says they are damaged, but when I try to import a new version the same thing keeps happening. I can't even edit the metadata. Is this the same problem? |

OK, I was wrong. Those two books that say they are damaged files will let me edit metadata. And I can view them in ADE, just not Calibre. I can live with not being able to see them in Calibre, I guess I am just anxious that something is wrong with the files. What do you think?

In Preferences, Behavior, under "use internal viewer for", uncheck PDF. Calibre will now open PDFs using the system specified application. Now select one of the problem books and click View. The PDF should open in the system viewer (probably ADE or Acrobat reader). If it looks fine than there isn't anything wrong with the PDF. It's just one cailbre's viewer can't handle.

Hmm, mine isn't working quite like that. When I looked, PDF was already unchecked. It is opening in a viewer different from the non-pdfs, but it doesn't look like ADE (at least ADE isn't launching). When I tried checking it, all of them were DRM so they don't open at all. So a very quick check and it appears these are all DRM'd PDFs, fwiw. But they definitely aren't opening in a viewable way, even with that box unchecked.

you have to specify ADE as your default viewer for pdf's in the OS I think. Calibre doesn't specify the external viewer AFAIK.
