Which to pair with a Kindle? iPad or iPod Touch??

My iPod Touch (2nd gen) experienced an unfortunate case of death by toddler, so now I'm shopping for a replacement.

So what would make the better complement to a Kindle: a new iPod Touch or an iPad? An iPhone is off the table because I don't want to pay for phone service/3G coverage.

I'd say the iPad. The 10" screen makes it an excellent large-screen reader.

The beauty of the iTouch is it's smaller size and therefore is always with me.

It depends what you want, of course. I have an iPhone, which is the same size as an iPod Touch. Although I have the usual array of reading apps on it (iBooks, Kindle App, etc) I rarely read on it because I find the screen too small for comfortable reading. I certainly wouldn't want to do any sustained reading on a screen that small. It's all a matter of personal preference at the end of the day.

Do you find that the iPad makes the Kindle redundant?

I had my iPod Touch before the Kindle. I didn't have problems reading on it, but I like reading on an e-ink screen better. In terms of reading, I'm mainly interested in being able to read knitting pattern charts (either PDFs or scans from pbooks and magazines).

How is the iPad for word processing? I have a macbook that I drag around with me and would love to have something a bit lighter.

No, I read on the Kindle a lot more. Its smaller size and light weight make it much more convenient to carry around, and I don't have to worry about needing to recharge it.

I actually use my iPad primarily as a portable video player, but it certainly does make a very nice large-screen reader for when I'm reading at home. It's great for web browsing, too. I'm writing this on my iPad.

Yes, I do/did like being able to just keep mine in my coat pocket instead of having to drag my entire purse around. It's a shame that one can't just magically make the thing double in size!

Like Leep, my iTouch 4G is always with me. Price is also a factor. Interesting dilemma.

Sure. I use my iPhone for all sorts of things like web browsing and email. I just don't like reading on it. As a portable internet device it can't be beaten.

Unfortunately there's no device that's perfect for everything!

How is it for listening to music?

ETA: Having something that will fit in my pocket, I think that's what I'm missing most about my dearly departed iPod Touch. On the other hand, I haven't used the thing in ages...

Exactly like a giant iPod, but it's really too big to drag around with you just as a music player. I use my iPhone for music. I think your best answer would be to get an iPod Touch and an iPad ;

Yup, I'm thinking the same thing!

Before the toddler decided to turn my iPod into a bath toy, I had planned to save up for an iPad. So, I guess the real question is, Which do I get FIRST?

Nope, no smart phone. Just a no-thrills, pay-as-you-go phone.
