Help : Screen broken ?
Can somebody tell me if the screen is broken ? The unit can still connect to a PC and I can read & write from the Cybook memory , but the lower half of the screen is locked into some sentences of an ebook I was reading and if I try to reboot the Cybook the upper half either becomes black or white or in stripes.
Is it worth (moneywise) changing the screen, eventually ? Anybody knows how much it costs ? Do you need a specialist ? Thanks and regards Bruno |

Not sure about the price, I paid mine 130 euros back then, but i think prices went down.
Contact bookeen, they'll tell you how much it actually cost. |

That might be a broken screen controller card, not a broken screen. The even parallel lines across the screen look like a controller issue IMHO.

The screen and its controller are a single unit, so yes, this is a broken screen. It looks, though, like a controller fault rather than a broken screen substrate - not that that will affect the price of replacement.

You're right - I'd overlooked that, and I agree with you. Broken substrate.

Thanks for the help, chaps. I wonder how I managed to break it, as I had in a coat pocket, with the leather cover on. It must have touched something unknowingly. It had already survived a couple of falls, with the only problem of a slightly harder power on button.
The unit is almost three years old and I still read mobipocket ebooks. From what you are telling me it looks like it will cost too much to repair. It's a pity, as I liked it, especially the use of folders, which I think other readers do not have. I'll have to buy another one, but Booken 6 inches cost too much, at least in Italy. I already have a 5 inches Sony and it does not completely suit my tastes. I'll navigate the forums and check. Thanks again to all. |

Have a look at the Italica. It is the same hardware as the Cybook and its price is down from 200€ to 99€ now. It reads prc. and other formats and it should be no problem to ship it to Italy. Just ask the vendor to use Hermes Versand, they charge only 15€ for signed-in dispatch to Italy. The seller is extremly nice and helpful.

Maybe a kindle, if you feel ready to deal with de-drming and converting.
And you mobi files once free of drm, can be read "as is". But, if you want to read in italian, you will have to de-drm the epubs and convert to mobi. Mmm, not sure about folders on the kindle. Then the other choices are sony prs-650, cybook orizon, and pockebook (I can't remember the number there). Wherever your choice, you're up to some mess with de-drming to keep your books. |

Thanks Eowyn.
Let us say that drm doesn't scare me. The large majority of my ebooks are drmfree. Fictionwise was wonderful while it lasted. Calibre is a wonderful helper and let's leave it at that. Reading in Italian is not a worry. In Italy the ebook market has basically just started for Italian ebooks, and it looks like the publisher are following something like the Agency model. Result is that ebooks are really highly priced. Since I can, I prefer to buy in English. Lots of choices, lower prices and I get a choice of where to buy. Lately Kobo is very nice, every week a discount. All in all also Amazon is not so bad. Reading on the iPad is not bad, especially the Kindle app. A Kindle could be nice, just cheap enough, wifi, the possibility of synchronising ebooks on the devices. I liked folders very much, though, they were very nice. Sony is sold in Italy, Pocketbook probably has to be ordered via web. iPad is good (very much so) but eink is better for basic reading. iPad has got me hooked, though, to turing on a device and having it available instantaneously. That is a firm requirement. I'll investigate. Need to study it further before committing to a new one. Thanks again everybody. Quote:

The Sonys do have stand-by. One slight pull at the power button and reading you are! It is great. When on stand-by all the time I have to recharge every two weeks.
