Necessary to register new Nook Color with B&N?

I might get a new NC this week, to be used solely as an Android tablet. Since I don't want to use any of the B&N ebook features, is it necessary to register with them with my personal info? If I want to root the device, does it have to be registered beforehand?

What do they do with your information? Do they ever send you snail mails?

Thanks for the help. I tried to search first, but the word "register" is too broad.

Unless you plan on replacing the default image with nookie froyo or something, you'll likely have to register. There is a setup application that runs automatically when you first turn it on and requires you to register to get past it, even if rooted.

I have never gotten snail mail from B&N, although they do send you email ads by default, which you can opt out of.
