New Kindle Owner

Hello everyone. I am happy to say that I am now the proud owner of a new Kindle 3. I purchased a new Jetbook Lite but unfortunately it was a defect out of the box and is being returned for a refund. My wife has a K3 and she has been letting me use hers, and I like it a lot. So far I have only tried .mobi books on hers and they seem to work fine. I will look around this forum and see what I need to learn about the K3 as well. I am excited and looking forward to some enjoyable reading.

I really like the Kindle very much. I am not saying that it is the perfect device for everyone because we all may like or need certain features, but for me the device works best from the ones I have seen in person and have had the time to try. I tried out and used these models and ended up with the Kindle:

B&N Nook wi-fi (nice device but did not like the touch screen)
Sony Reader Pocket Edition (wanted a larger screen)
Jetbook Lite (purchased it and was a defect out of the box, so returned it)
Pandigital Novel (LCD hurt my eyes to read on)

I am legally blind (visually impaired) so that plays a huge part in what I bought. The screen contrast on the Kindle for my eyes was better than others that I have tried. The screen on the Jetbook Lite was grey, which made text hard to read for me. I do not want to sound like a Kindle fanboy, but you know what....I am. The device has made me very happy. Now I can read books without the eyestrain that I get from paper book and 10X prism reading glasses. I do not want to harp on this, but it does mean a lot to me (tear), the Kindle is allowing me to read for 30 minutes at a time in comfort and enjoyment. I have never been able to do that before with reading glasses or large print books. I am very pleased with the Kindle 3 Wi-Fi.

Yes, one thing that is overlooked is that some people buy e-readers because they are unable to read hard copy books.

I used to be an avid reader, but had to stop due to illness. Kindle's are great because they are so easy on the eye and the font size can be easily increased.

In some of the discussions regarding the price of ebooks there have been comments to the effect that if you think ebooks are overpriced, then buy the paperback. Not all those who wish to read the book have that option.

I too am pleased with my kindle which I bought a few months ago (after a considerable period of dithering). The kindle menu's are not always as intuitive as I would like but it incredibly easy to buy books and they download so quickly.

It is a real shame though that I cannot use it to read library ebooks. Prior to my illness I borrowed oodles of library books, and those that I liked I bought in paperback either for myself or as gifts. I certainly tried out authors I would have not read otherwise.

Amazon really need to sort out their act regarding Overdrive/epub books as the current situation is ridiculous. I can certainly understand the temptation to strip out DRM to reformat and 'borrow' a book to read on a kindle which can legally be 'borrowed' to read on on another e-reader (providing the DRM stripped book is deleted when the loan period is up and the book is not shared). If Apple can get their head round this then Amazon should be able to as well.

Congrats that the Kindle works this well for you. I have two Kindles myself and also an iPad.
I've heard that some people with visual handicaps also like to read on the iPad, which also has a voice-over function and a Kindle-apps.
Happy reading and, as a booklover myself, I congratulate you again.:

welcome to the forums ellianna! please be sure to check out the thread in the upper part of this page for free and reduced priced books. I have found that getting these books MORE than makes up for library usage, and also introduces me to a lot of genres and authors I would not normally read. there is also the Patricia Clark Memorial Library on this site full of public domain books to keep you happily reading for awhile!

enjoy!
