Where is the actual epub file?

I'm buying books from kobo and it gives me an acsm file that opens with Reader Library. It then proceeds to download the book and I can drag and drop it into my reader. I'm just wondering if there is anyway to get the epub book itself, and back it up on my hard drive.

I LOVE my sony reader - I have the PRS600. I HATE the Reader Library, and don't use it anymore to put books on the Sony. I use Adobe Digital Editions to download and put all my ePub and PDF books on my ereaders.

As I mentioned above, I use the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to put ePub & PDF books on my ereader devices. This is a free download www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions . You will need to make up an account through them, which is free also.

Purchase your ePub & PDF books from your ebook seller, then SAVE them on your computer, don't open them. I made a File Folder on my computer that I save all my Digital Books to: "MY DIGITAL EDITIONS". Then in Windows Explorer, click on the download file .acsm file, right click "Open with" your book with Adobe Digital Editions. ADE will then open up, then begin downloading your book. OR, if your file is already on your computer in a ePub/PDF format, Open ADE, and "add book to library" at the left top - this is a drop down. ADE will then load your file, and you can then put on ereader device.

After the download through ADE, your .acsm file will then be a ePub file on your computer, and will be saved on there.

When you want to put books on the Sony, you will run ADE then hook up the Sony reader to computer with the USB cord. The first time you hook up your new reader to ADE, it will ask you to "register" your device. Put in your Adobe account info (ID & password). This is a one time thing. Your SONY will show up on the left side of the books covers in ADE, and you will just click and drag the book onto the SONY.

When you are done, close ADE and disconnect device from computer. Let your Sony update the books, and your books will be in your library.

Hope this helps!!!

ok, i'm restarting this post from scratch :P.

I now know where to find all the epub files, but I do not know how to change the file names without unsyncing them from ADE. Is there any way to change the file name within ADE? I'd like to change the name so that I can have my collections sorted properly based on the where a novel is in a series of books.

As ADE does not allow users to decide where it stores files:

On Windows 7:

%Root%\Users\(user name)\My Documets\My Digital Editions

%Root% = the drive your OS is on.

Or: C:\Users\(user name=your name)\My Documents\My digital editions

If you're wanting to back up the epub files, back up the entire "My Digital Editions" directory as there are three sub directories that hold annotations, the cover jpg files for your epub books, and an ADE restore directory.

I just load/add the epub files/books into Calibre from this directory and Calbre puts it's own copies in it's own 'user nominated' directories, and let my daily backup of the %root% (C:\ drive) take care of the "My Digital editions" directory backup.

Not sure about other versions of Windows or other operating systems...

When I purchase a book, when Windows asks if I want to open or save the acsm file I rename it to the book title and save it to my 'download' directory rather than open it in ADE.

Once the acsm file has been saved I start ADE, open the download directory, then drag and drop the acsm file from the download directory to ADE and it then downloads the epub file and renames it to what I want it to be and srores it in it's own directory with the book name rather than the default acsm filename. (see previous post in this thread)

It's a couple of extra steps when buying a book online but it saves having to find the file later, rename it, and reload it into ADE, Calibre, etc.

Use windows standard file handling operations... open the directory containing the acsm file and then drag'n'drop it onto the ADE application icon... if that doesn't make sense then ask your local windows helper person... easier to have someone explain and demonstrate in person if you aren't familiar enough with windows...

Ummmm, that isn't how it came across to me, sorry. I had been thinking that there was a menu within ADE. I am familiar enough with windows thank you very much.

Reading it again, I see what he means, its just not how I read it at first. In any case, this still didn't give me the option to actually save the Epub file with a name of my choice. I went into the manifest file and attempted to change the directory there, but it would not save over the other manifest.

Hi, Fayth. I think what you are asking is how to change the name of the book as it shows in ADE and not necessarily the name of the file on your hard-drive? The name of the book is controlled by the file metadata. You need a program like the free software calibre to change metadata. Although I am not sure if you can change the metadata on a file with DRM. Calibre also has the ability to store and sort data for books in a series. Myself, I open acsm files with the Sony Reader Library software. I create a Collection for the Series of books and then drag and drop them in the collection list into the right order. It's like creating a music playlist in iTunes. Hope that helps!

Thanks I'll give that a try.

And actually I was trying to change the file name, but without screwing up my sync with ADE. If I changed the file name in either the ebook or the ADE directory, it would mess up my ADE program.

I think I found out a way to do it though, it'll just mean I have to ignore the whole reader software thing. After I transfer it I can always just rename the file on the ereader, then my collection will be in order on the ereader as long as I sort by file name.

EDIT: Apparently the Sony Reader Library doesn't care when I change the file name on the ereader itself, so I guess I'll just use it instead of ADE.

You only need to rename the acsm file when saving it, when Windows asks where you want to save it.

The acsm file is a small file that tells ADE (when you drag and drop, or open the acsm file in ADE) that it needs to download the matching epub file from the ADE website, for the authorised user, and rename the epub file to be named the same as the acsm file.

That didn't work for me. I've renamed the ASCM file and it still names the book The_Way_of_Kings, no matter what I rename the ASCM file to. However, I can change the file name in the ereader itself when it is plugged in, and the sony Reader Library has no problems with that.

EDIT: Well, I've been toying with Calibre, and I can see why everyone recommends it. It not only allows me to designate how all files are named when transfered to the reader but it also creates the collection on my ereader for me. The only thing that bothers me about it is that I have to download the cover every time for some reason.
