Calibre & Kindle Annnotations
I'm trying to figure out what I can use the Kindle annotations for in Calibre.
I have Kindle books that have bookmarks and Location saved, in the comments field under annotations. When I remove that book and then place a copy back on the Kindle, it starts out completely fresh. There are no bookmarks and the book starts on the very first page (not at the old saved Location). I believe the bookmarks may still be in My Clippings, but I don't get the little folded-down corner marking when a (previously) bookmarked location is on the screen. I had thought that by saving the bookmarks and location, they would be send out with the book the next time I placed it on the Kindle. That seems to be wrong. So, what are they saved for? What can I "do" with this information? |

@gwen: I have always hoped for a way to use the Kindle annotations as an indicator for whether a book was read or not. So far not possible it appears.
@Kovid: when fetching annotations Calibre says that data is "merged" into the database. I KNOW it says "experimental" in the menu, but ... XX% read in the DB converted into a "read" column ? Too "Kindly", too hard to do, too .... I know submit a ticket/request. IS it possible without breaking anything vital ? I DON'T understand much of the internal workings of Calibre ! But .. "Santa" - my wish for Christmas is ..... please let us use the annotations for custom columns. Any ways - EXELENT work from the whole team ! Have NEVER seen anything like your responsiveness, rate of new version, acceptence of new features etc. etc. Just hoping, Cheers |

Unfortunately, GRiker, who wrote the annotations code no longer uses the Kindle and so it's unlikely to see any further development. In any case, it doesn't work with newer Kindles since Mazon changed how annotations are stored.

Hi Kovid.
Thanks for the info/background. Don't understand you comments about the newer Kindles. It works fine with the K3 and newest firmware. Shows up in the Book Details. We can only hope someone else can take up the challenge after GRiker. |

This feature works on the Kindle 3. What changed was how this information is stored on the Kindle itself, so it broke the method used with the Kindle 2 for transferring it to/from Calibre. I am not sure if anyone has worked out how to transfer this information to/from a Kindle 3 in a manner usable by Calibre.

@itimpi: You're talking about the *.mbp files ?
As you say, the data is retrieved from the K3 fine, but I can't use that data inside Calibre. Would be neat to have a column showing "percentage read" for each book. The data must be there ! It shows up in the Book details ?!!? I have no need to mark a book read in Calibre and then transfer that to K3. Maybe I just misunderstand you post ? @gwen: just re-read your original post. Sorry - i didn't really understand your questions. I'm afraid I've "highjacked" you post for a wish of mine. I appologize ! Last edited by pchrist7; 12-04-2010 at 06:11 AM. |

![]() The answer is that I won't be able to do anything with the annotations, because the author of the annotation code has moved on, and on top of it Amazon has changed the annotation format on K3's. |

@gwen:author moving on is a bummer. BUT it still woks, sort of even on the K3. At least it shows in the book details.
Can only hope .... Merry Xmas & Happy new years to you all |
