Internet coverage
I'm thinking of getting a Kindle but not sure whether the option with 3g is what I think it is (!). I would like to be able to access my email whilst in europe but gather the wi fi/3g options on the kindle are really just for downloading books and is not intended for internet...all I want to do is read my email in europe as I tend to be in isolated rural areas of France and Spain (one of the very fewbars that had internet in very rural Spain had windows 98 working at glacial speed). What do people think? I'm not tech savvy...I just want to read books whilst away and check my email now and again.thanks

You need to pop into the Kindle forum, there'll be plenty of info there for you. At least one member uses their Kindle to browse this forum....

Hi omar and welcome to MobileRead. You might consider getting an iPad as you can read eBooks on that and also browse the net.

Hi Omar
If you are going to be in isolated rural areas of France and Spain, will there be 3g and/or wi-fi at all? It doesn't matter how well your device works if there is no coverage, so you might want to check that first. I have no idea what it's like in rural France and Spain, but when I lived in rural Australia (NT), I lost phone signal five minutes out of town. Welcome to MR. There's quite a contingent of Aussies here. ![]() |

Welcome to MR! Not sure about Europe, but here in the US my 3G works anywhere there is AT&T coverage. Maybe someone in the Kindle forum has an answer that more appropriate for your area.

Hi Omar, not sure about the version sold in Ozz, but mine (3g+wifi) from Canada has an internet connection option, though it is listed on the menu as 'experimental' and is not included in the manual.
I don't use mine for email but if you had a gmail or similar email account, don't see why you couldn't use it for that. It is fairly slow though, and difficult to maneuver, so added to the connectivity issue it would be cumbersome at best but sounds like it would be fine for you. There certainly is a large contingency of Aussies on here, I myself have a daughter living on the Mornington peninsula at Mt. Eliza. Sharon |

Thanks for your replies. I actually phoned Amazon and spoke to someone there about internet coverage and he was vague about whether the international version of the Kindle had the wi fi/3g option. Has any international, ie non US, Kindle user been able to use the wi fi/3g?
