Is it a bad way to connect the PC frenquently?

I connect my Kindle-3 at least twice a day to transfer some ebooks from my laptop. Every time upon the connection, the screen will indicate that battery is not charged. Now here comes the question: why it is not being charged while the kindle is connected with the PC as we know usually the PC will charge the gadget when connected.

So in my understanding, it is charged when Kindle is plugged into the PC. Is it harmful, for example my Kindle's battery is alreadly 100% full of power, that I connect the kindle too many time a day with the PC?

The only harm I could see if that eventually the battery may not fully charge. They say the new batteries don't have a "memory" like batteries of the past, but I'm not sure I believe that.

Lithium batteries don't exhibit the "memory effect" which only occurred with Nickel Cadmium batteries and only in very specific cases. What everybody called the memory effect was actually misuse or natural aging/wear of the battery. The memory effect only occurred in NiCds if you discharged them to exactly the same point each time and then charged them back up to 100% precisely. This never happens in consumer electronics.

What will affect a Lithium battery whether it is Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer is the number of full charge/discharge cycles, the age of the battery and if you leave it at 0% charge for an extended period of time i.e. weeks. A discharge to 50% would be roughly half a cycle etc... Once a Lithium battery has been manufactured, it will start aging. You can't reverse or stop this process so don't buy any Lithium batteries that have a manufacturing date a long time in the past even if it is new.

So basically, the answer to the question is no. You won't damage the battery. The only way you'd damage it is if you started charging it outside of the rated temperature range or if you leave it discharged for months.

The Kindle will only charge the battery if it is necessary. If it never charges from that PC then it means there is something wrong or odd about that USB port or PC.

I believe that the kindle only seems to trickle charge. Not like cellphones that go for a fast charge cycle. So if it's only on your pc briefly it doesn't gain that much charge.

The other reason you may have less charging connected to a pc is if the pc isn't getting enough power to it's usb ports, this usually is only a problem on some laptop/netbooks or if it's connected to an unpowered usb hub.

Tiersten is correct. LiPo has no memory, has a time limited life (4-ish years from assembly), limited charge/discharge cycles (400-ish), can be left plugged into a charger forever, will charge more slowly from a low power USB port and may not charge at all from a very low power USB port. For 'fuel gauge' charge level indicator, once per month discharge to charge required indication to calibrate the 'fuel gauge'.

If you transfer a lot of books every day then the background indexing will take most of the resources until the indexing finish - so battery is discharged 15-30% and thus Kindle goes to charge it when you connect it. Do not worry but just leave it to fully charge once a week. Also it is recommended that after you transfer a lot of books to leave it connected while reindexing finished (or at least take a lot of work). So, I usually transfer books, disconnect Kindle via USB removal but keep it connected to USB (or connect it to the wall charger) for a hour. Indexing starts only when you disconnect (unmount) Kindle from the PC via software (i.e. not showing Kindle root drive in PC).

On my Toshiba Laptop I have to configure the USB ports as to whether they will charge a connected device such as a cell phone or simply act as data transfer when a usb cable is attached. Maybe your laptop has a similar configuration setting somewhere and is not charging attached devices - will other devices charge when attached to the usb port??
