How do you name the ebook files?

How do you name the ebook files? Are their named like "Author - Title.[file extension]" or somehow different?

I have noticed that at least iRiver Story has limited number of characters it can show on main "book" list. Thus naming files like
Edgar Rice Burroughs - Warlords of Mars.epub et al
will only show me as "Edgar Rice Burroughs..."
If I had multiple books from him, all books will show as "Edgar Rice Burroughs..." :-/

So, i usually name them as Warlords of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs).epub
to get most of the title showing..

Not a big thing but I'm just curious

On my HDD, I save my books in a folder structure, which also contains part of the total book-data.

LastName, FirstName\Series\Series Index - Book Title.

For saving to my various devices, I have as many save templates (using Calibre for that) as I have devices

Non-meta-data reading devices (such as my BBMini) use the same structure, my JE100 I use the meta data where the title is made up like this:

LastName, FirstLetter - Series - Series Index - Book Title.

And on the sony I use

Series - Series Index - Book Title

With collections of the authors.

I do it similarly on HDD where I have folders by authors.
\Author Name\Book name (Author Name).epub.

I use this scenario also in device but device shows only the filename. Author in parenthesis is then needed anyways. Its merely to help catalog them better way.

With me I typically do it as "Series - Title - # in series" and then file books by author under their own directories.

I do a slight variation of this " Series - # in Series - Title" and then let calibre file it anyway it chooses. Now when I browse by title, on either my Kobo or Kindle 3, all the books in a series show up in order.

I am naming my book files as they re-released, by the convention: "Book_Title_Steven_Lyle_Jordan.extension". I make sure the book's metadata has the appropriate title and author name, and let that dictate how the book is displayed.

One interesting fact about the Iriver (don't know if it applies to other readers) is that, if you name a file "Author - Title" or merely "Title" it will appear in the long book list. If you name it "Title - Author" it won't.

We've discussed how to organise books in the reader in the Iriver forum. No doubt others have done that in other reader forums also. So far I have created a folder for each author on the Iriver, but I retain the "Author - Title" format for the title, since sometimes you want to search on author name, and if the book is invisible, it doesn't help! However, I'm a little interested in some of the suggestions in this thread, and some people might just be getting a PM from me soon!

And yes, we're all a bit pissed off that at least the Iriver doesn't wrap the file name so you never know which of an author's books you are looking at, if you don't open it up. I suppose one could use some kind of author code, like, say, JA for Jane Austen, so that some at least of the book title appears, but that's a lot of hassle.

I was thinking that as well. I just think it does not look nice, though.
I will try your suggestions about naming and see if there is any difference.

That's why I wanted to ask here, to get new ideas. And I did, thanks.

I let Calibre manage them on my computer.
My PEz only has file lists, so I use 2 basic forms
00noseries/<<letter>_Authors/LN,FN/Title(index#)
<letter>_series/Series/Series#-Title-(index#)-Author

Many of my series have multiple Author(pairs) so having Author priority is a bad idea.

Also, by using a first level grouping by letter, I minimize the number of (8 item) screens I need to scroll through. With 1200 books on my reader, no level has more than 4 pages of scroll (except 1 series that has over 100 titles).

I'm not entirely consistent on this, and I should change that. Generally speaking, I just edit the metadata so that it has the correct info in the author and title field so I can properly sort by either one. The file name won't show up in my Nook unless there's no metadata, so file names are just so I remember what they are. Theoretically, I'll eventually stick everything into calibre so I can use it to organize all my books and file names won't matter a jot, but I've got so many books that importing and editing all the data for them is tedious. I keep procrastinating. :P

I use calibre, which takes care of the HDD end for me. I know people have a strange thing about using the filesystem for their metadata, but where do you file a book by Abel and Baker jointly? I just let calibre worry about that, and I deal with books, not computer files. Thankfully, my Sony is reasonably smart about what to do with the books it gets. I use tags to sort my books into collections -- for instance, Cryoburn is in a "SF" collection, a "fiction" collection, and a TBR collection, plus a "Miles Vorkosigan" series, though I'm not currently using series on the Sony -- and then I can find them by author, title, or category.
