Possible to add function to restart news downloads
A quick suggestion for Calibre. I frequently find that news downloads get 'stuck' and then time out. This is particularly true for the London Independent, which often needs three restarts to get it downloaded properly. This is probably down to their site, and I'm not asking for a revised recipe, but the process of restarting is a bit tedious, particularly if, like me, you are remote from the Calibre server. You have to go to the jobs page, close the job, close the page, go back to the main screen, click the news dropdown, then click the absolutely tiny dropdown for schedule news, then choose the item, then select download, then close that page, then go to the jobs page again to check. If it hasn't worked, then it must all be done again. This is all on a remote console from a tablet, so it's possible, but not easy.
A very simple solution would be to have a right click menu item, or a button on the jobs page that allows "stop and restart current job". It only takes a few seconds to see if the item has restarted, and the jobs page would not then not need to be closed and re-opened (so could be left open all the time). Might that be possible? Even better btw, would be an auto restart if the item was not downloaded after the timeout period, but just the manual restart would be awesome. Many thanks D. |

You dont need to do all that. Just two steps.
1) Click jobs button and then click stop all non device jobs 2) right click the fect news button and choose "Download all scheduled news sources" |

Thanks for the fast response Kovid. That helps in not having to close the jobs panel every time you want to restart the download. But you still have to open the scheduled News panel, find the tiny dropdown icon, select the news item and start the download. Then if the download job stalls. you have to close the News panel, stop the job and go through the above sequence all over again. This is all quite hard to do on a remote console to the server. A restart button would be a bit quicker and easier, particularly as I go through this process twice per day on most days. Understand that it may not be a simple thing to do. Many thanks anyway for such a brilliant bit of code.

I've been asking for this for months, but no joy.
It seems like only 2 clicks, but you have to close the news dialog box to see whether the recipe is downloading. And then reopen it to cancel and resubmit the recipe when it fails .... again... and again... especially with some recipes that have high failure rates. If we could keep the new dialog box open, THEN it's only 2 clicks. But with the current setup, it's at least 5 clicks to cancel the fail stalled recipe, reopen the news dialog box, find the recipe, resubmit it, and close the dialog box again. Each time.
