disable internet connection
Hello everyone!
english is not my native language, so please forgive any 'strange expressions'. i just installed calibre, and as i usually do with a new software, I check 'options' to switch off all automatic internet connections. -I switched off "tell about new versions" -and off with "metadata sources" Does anyone know, if calibre will still look for new versions and just don't tell me? How can I disable this statistic-thingy? status.calibre-ebook.com/ Is there any transfer between my reader and the internet while calibre is running and the reader is connected to the comp? PS: I know that nowadays its pretty normal to make a data-strip. Evryone who wants that..ok. Please accept that i see it different. Pleasepleaseplease no debate on principals. I'm very frustrated from other forums, and I just dont want to justify again. Sorry to sound a bit harsh but i just want to control my data-upload without "hoooo, she fears cia!"-sayings. Jimmina |

I am unsure how to turn off the usage statistic collection. There is no option I am aware of, but you can run from source and edit the code where it does the connection. (I did not figure out where, but I haven't really looked.)
If updates are turned off, it will not even check. Updates are checked here which calls the code here which says: Code:
if not opts.no_update_check: self.update_checker = CheckForUpdates(self) PHP Code:

Set your firewall to disallow calibre internet access?
Add an entry to your local hosts file to point status.calibre-ebook.com to 127.0.0.1 |

hey,
so i looked verrry motivated at the calibre-develop page and it took 30 secs and I was overwhelmed hahaha so i downloaded fwbuilder, and it took -hmmmm- 40 secs...and overwhelmed again. but no worries, I won't bother you. I finally asked my man (what i wanted to avoid...). He took a look at your replies and he loves the idea of PeterT! And as soon I understood that idea I like it as well But still we will work through the code, just to see what else internet connections there might be. Thank you so far! |

The problem with doing this via the code is that you'll have to do it every single time you update Calibre.

Either way, you'd have to pull the changes. Rebasing them preserves local commits, which is nicer than seeing a merge conflict. (Instant panic while people new to version control wonder what to do.) @JSWolf, have you used version control before? If not, remember that assumptions are not always wise. If yes, why not give a fair explanation, rather than oversimplifying? How are people supposed to learn? There are better reasons not to use the code... like using firewalls for what they are meant for. Last edited by eschwartz; 09-05-2014 at 05:04 PM. |

Nope, I've not used version control with Github.
