Replacement EINK screen - reputable suppliers?
I've been looking around for a replacement screen for a K3 3G and found:
http://www.displaysscreen.com/ Has anyone used them? Any reports good or bad are welcome. If you are UK or western Europe based even better. Suggestions for other sources of cheap screens in the UK are also welcome. N.B. CeX has lots of B grade K3 WiFi in stock at £45 so if the cost is over £35 all in, I'd do better to get one, do a main board transplant and keep the spare keyboard and battery. Or just buy a used K3 3G on ebay as a replacement and don't bother trying to change the screen?
There have been threads about replacing screens before on the forum and I think you need to be careful you get exact same screen so you don't have issues with incorrect waveform - a quick search brings up this thread in the developers forum, which may be of interest: Update eink waveform. |

You can get practically new screens from ebay. Over the past 2 years I cracked my screen twice and ordered replacements from ebay (some guy in texas has them for $35) and always worked perfectly.
The issue is that now, replacement screens are almost the same price as a used k3g on craigslist. |

Yes. Used prices are dropping, and with the keyboard being a known weakness if used for serious text editing/programming, as I said above I am seriously considering another used K3. I'll see where the prices end up once the post-Xmas selloff gets going. This is my backup device so no great urgency.
Ebay UK in the runup to Xmas is pretty cruddy. I could pay more than CeX retail for a blacklisted K3 and have even odds of funding some thieving toerag. I'm still interested in hearing your responses though. Thanks for replying. |

I've bought 3 or 4 from AliExpress. Never had any problems with them. You have to know that removing an e-ink screen from a used Kindle is a delicate operation. They are lightly glued to the face plate, and are very, very easy to crack. Some recommend using a hair dryer to warm the glue, but I'd be concerned about damaging a screen that way. I've done it by working a very thin plastic tool between the face plate and screen from the front, working very slowly to peel the face plate from the screen (and not the reverse). Don't try to pull the screen out from the back. I broke an already defunct screen this way (removed it to replace with a new one, and used the process to experiment on removal). I have renovated 4 Kindle Keyboards with screens or motherboards. Friends have given me their broken Kindles. I now have 4 working ones.

In the UK too. Used AliExpress 4 or 5 times for K3 screens. Take a while to get here but better to pay $35 than £35 :-)

Yes, I'd figured out that fragility is a major problem. Removing a good screen from the casefront/bezel strikes me as crazy unless the plastic is excessively damaged.
Thanks muchly for the link. |
