There are a couple of features listed on the Amazon product page for that device that I am curious about:

Data encryption

Data on your device, as well as data in transit to Amazon servers, is fully encrypted.
That implies that you will not be able to retrieve data from the device in a usable form.

Quote:
Tamper resistant

Only authorized software can run, protecting against tampering.
That indicates they are doing something new to prevent jailbreaking.

I think both are a little better than my Colorsoft, and BW contrast looks better than my 2022 Scribe somehow.

I don't see evidence of this. I was able to import a notebook to calibre, and also a KFX personal document. I could try .sdr folder files too but doubt there are any issues with them either.

That is interesting. Amazon’s statement about personal documents being encrypted on device is intended to promote sales to businesses where security is important. If they are being dishonest about that it could get them into legal trouble. (Of course their terms of service probably absolve them of any actual responsibility.)

Maybe it is a feature they can turn on for said businesses. It would sure be annoying for regular customers.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that they mean the whole flash or partition is encrypted, not individual files. It's one of the loopholes of compliance checkboxes. I've got servers that are encrypted at rest (powered off or pre-boot), but upon boot up the filesystem is unlocked and everything is accessible.

At this point that seems likely. Possibly using an SSD with hardware encryption for battery conservation and speed.

Does the Scribe use a SSD? Remember that you can purchase eMMC with inline encryption support (hardware in the flash controller handles the encryption/decryption so minimal overhead). You can also get RPMB capabilities.

I assume it is just a chip. Sorry, I wasn’t clear. I meant SSD generically as storage.
