Add WiFi network that doesn't exist yet?

My grandfather has a Kobo H20, and lives thousands of miles away. I set up the device for him when we were together. He made the mistake of contacting Kobo support, and they made him do a factory reset. He doesn't see well (hence the e-reader with big fonts), so he sent me the device to set up again.

However, I can't add his WiFi network. I have the credentials, but Kobo won't add a network that doesn't exist, even via the Add flow.

Is there a config file that stores WiFi credentials where I can manually add his network, so that it connects when he boots up upon receiving the device?

I'm wondering if another alternative is to recreate his network on my own, add it normally, and then hope it works on his end, but I'd rather update a file if it's easy.

on many linux distributions, you can edit the “wpa_supplicant.conf” file to preconfigure a wireless network. i’m not super familiar with kobo modification, so i’m not sure whether this is applicable. try searching the kobo forum for the string “supplicant”.

the other thing you can try is just “duplicating” your grandfather’s home network, in your own home. get into your router/AP’s config page, create a new network (or temporarily rename your current one) named exactly what his is named, and set the password to what his password is. then, join his kobo to your local version of his network. when it arrives in his home and wifi on the kobo is enabled, it should connect just fine.

ETA: make sure your dummy setup net is configured on the same frequency band as the eventual destination network. also, my apologies -- my eyes apparently totally glossed over your last paragraph where you said you're already aware of the wlan duplication trick.

In theory it's possible. In practice doing your idea of mimicking his WiFi should work and is simpler.

I've multiple "identical" WiFi points (for coverage in house and workshop) and that seems to work with everything.
