I’m also having a similar issue to this post.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=369093 I didn't want to hijack that thread as this might be something different. Was at version 7.21.0 (never noticed that it was showing 7.9* bottom left corner) and installed the new 8.7.0 update and it goes through the install with no issues. System does ask to go into admin mode which I allowed. After install, rebooted Win11 and ran Calibre and it continued to show 7.9* in bottom left corner and 'Update found' bottom right. (See attachments) Went to the executable and opened up properties and it does shows 8.7.0. Checked to new features between 7.9 and 8.7, but other than new newsfeeds, didn’t see any changes. I’ve tried uninstalling Calibre, reboot, install 7.26, reboot, run Calibre, but it still shows 7.9* bottom left. I updated to 8.7.0 with reboots and still shows the same. I am not running any AV other than native Win11 (Security/Defender) as I don’t use this machine other than for Calibre. How can I confirm that I do in fact have the right version install, is there a prominent feature I can find to verify. Why the 7.9* bottom left? And it continues to show 'Update found' bottom right (I had been ignoring until now) Otherwise, Calibre runs just fine, with no issues with database, books, or plugins. |

Features I checked for but couldn't find
Features checked for:
8.3 Cover grid: Allow configuring different backgrounds for light and dark mode in Preferences->Look & feel->Cover grid 8.1.1 Edit metadata dialog: Allow right clicking on the cover to edit it with an external program 7.26 Allow specifying web search links that are used when clicking on item names in the Book details panel for custom columns via Preferences->Add your own columns 7.24 Allow creating rules to transform series names in the Bulk metadata editor and Preferences->Metadata download 7.24 Edit book: Spell check: Add a button to export the currently displayed list of words as a CSV file I figured I should be able to find at least one of these. Also please note, that when I uninstalled Calibre - I did verify that C:\Program Files\Calibre2 didn't exist after the uninstall. As it stands, I am sitting on 8.7.0 which shows 7.9* in Calibre (but file exec shows 8.7.0) and 'Update Found: 8.7.0' still shows though I'm on that version. |

Wish it was that easy.
Right clicking the shortcut, properties, points to "C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre.exe" Open File Location, right click calibre.exe, properties, shows File Version 8.7.0 Running calibre.exe from Command prompt in the folder itself, starts Calibre which shows 'calibre 7.9* created by Kovid Goyal' (bottom left on status bar) and 'Update found: 8.7.0' bottom right. Windows shows under Installed Apps - Calibre 8.7.0, the executable shows 8.7.0, so it shouldn't be saying Update found and correct version should show. Also, I uninstalled Calibre, and verified the program folder was removed and searched for calibre.exe on all drives, which doesn't show any other executables. Ran 8.7.0 install and no joy. One thing I did notice was that under AppData\Roaming\calibre\gui.json was that the last line in the gui config file (which I do not edit via the .json) "windows_register_default_programs": "7.9.0" whereas on a different computer that 8.7.0 was successfully installed it shows "windows_register_default_programs": "8.7.0" So for giggles, I backed gui.json up and manually changed that last line from 7.9.0 to 8.7.0. When I started Calibre, it automatically changed back to 7.9.0 I checked my library via Library Maintenance - Check Library and there where no problems. |

So as an additional test, thinking maybe it was something in Calibre config files or Plugins.
I renamed AppData\Roaming\cailbre to calibre.old and my library folder from Calibre to Calibre.old. Started Calibre and it went through the initial database creation and afterwards still shows the 7.9* version in Calibre. If C:\Program Files\Calibre2 is gone (via Uninstall), AppData\Roaming\calibre (where config files are) is gone, and Library folder empty, basically Calibre has been completely removed from system. Shouldn't all configuration or saved settings be removed? And end up with a Clean install via the calibre-64bit-8.7.0.msi which was downloaded from https://calibre-ebook.com/dist/win64? |

I've installed every version of calibre since late 2011 (0.8.?) on Windows 7, 10 and 11 and I have never had to use Administration mode. And I had no problems installing/running 8.7.0 here on Win10 or Win 11.
FTR: my gui.json has "windows_register_default_programs": "2.54.0". Try running in Safe Mode - if that works, then it's something external to calibre. If it doesn't work, try this: With calibre not running, rename gui.json to gui.json.save, and then start calibre - direct from the .exe - it will create a fresh gui.json with default settings. BR |

Found the problem, back in early 2024, I setup a development of Calibre from Github to learn more about how Calibre worked behind the scenes and make custom tweaks. And I never disabled it.
I was using the CALIBRE_DEVELOP_FROM environment variable to point to the Github source on my system. So, Calibre was doing EXACTLY what it was being told to do. It would be helpful if when Calibre starts it would show DEVELOP next to the version number (maybe that's what that * is) Time to go outside and take my dog to the beach. |

Check for environment variables being set; you want to ensure that CALIBRE_DEVELOP_FROM is NOT set
