Can virtualbox emulate a Kindle?

I am currently working to update the sox media player for KUAL plugin and am handicapped by not being able to test things directly as I have only an older Kindle with older firmware.

It would be helpful to have a way to boot a virtualbox with the current HF firmware and have a terminal window that I could test sox and its dependencies with. A virtualbox HF Kindle running that I could SSH into would be very helpful. I would of course also need to be able to transfer files to and from the VB HF Kindle in some manner.

Any ideas for this?

It likely depends on what your host machine is. AFAIK, VirtualBox doesn't do cross-architecture. So, if you're on an x86 machine it can't run ARM VMs, and vice versa. QEMU will do it, though, but can be much more complex to set up.

That was what I was afraid of. I am running Linux on an x86_64 laptop. I guess that is out then. Too much work for too litter return.

QEMU would run ok on that, but maybe not super fast. It's just that setting up an equivalent ARM VM might take some tweaking if you don't already have an equivalent device on-hand to compare with.

I have a pw4 running early firmware. I am preparing a version of the Sox media player for the HF firmware, which requires putting together a set of HF libraries that will work with the HF firmware environment. The main Sox binary and its libraries work right now, but the libraries for the supported formats are a problem, as many of the ones I grabbed need a later glibc than the 2.20 provided by Amazon. Someone is helping me test, but it would be quicker to handle it myself.

might be a way to use VB?

a LONG time ago I used a debian chroot to compile stuff for arm on an old kindle touch. I dont see why using a debian host vm couldnt do the same thing?

if that works I had also created a script that compared new libraries with the ones already on the kindle and then could load the new ones when running the program?

These are just suggestions and may not work for your project but I thought it seemed similar enough with what you were asking? Good luck!
