Well, I've been daily carrying e-ink readers since the Sony PRS-505 and have never cracked a screen.

In fact, before e-ink I carried machines like the Franklin eBookMan, whatever the Rocket eBook turned into (I worked at Gemstar but not on that), and various Palm and Psion devices going back to the original Palm Pilot (for PalmDOC then Mobi then Plucker) and the Psion Series 5 (the Revo had a beeeooootiful LCD screen) and a Casio WinCE machine with a scrollwheel on the side and MS Reader for .LIT books.

No cracked screen yet in just about 30 years of always having a book reader with me.

For that amount of hacking it would probably be easier to root a Kindle and install KOReader haha.

Would still keep turning the device off by accident by setting it down on the table though

The Supernotes are intriguing (though more so the 10" Manta than the 8" Nomad) but reviews seem to indicate they are on the slow side. Between that and lack of frontlight they are disqualified for me. I am really digging the Manta though. I have to keep telling myself that I have switched to keyboard-based note-taking and shouldn't go back to hand writing.

How about
https://inkbook.eu/de/products/inkbook-focus-plus

7.8 inch screen, slim side bezel design, reads everything and lets you use those manga apps.

I have absolutely no idea how fast they are, but they look chic enough for me to wanna have one 😁
