I was able to change the text to Right to left so have some progress here. Thank you!
Now I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to have the words to spell correctly.
Any idea?

Download https://extensions.libreoffice.org/a...2012-08-15.oxt
Select Preferences for Edit Book > Editor settings > Manage spelling dictionaries > Add dictionary and add the .oxt file.

Do you mean that before you set the text direction the words were listed incorrectly left to right but the letters of each word were correctly right to left? And now that situation is reversed? If so then it may just be that the text was entered incorrectly.

Hi tsouron,

I have the same issue as you.

I'm trying to send to my kindle library an English-Hebrew dictionary.
On my kindle the Hebrew translated definitions words are ordered from left-to-right, instead of from right-to-left.

Did you figure out how to fix this issue?

You have to revere the letters in the Hebrew words because the dictionary does not support RTL.

Is this limitation specific to the Kindle Android app?
Because the Hebrew dictionary is showing ok (from RTL) in the Kindle apps for iOS and Windows.

Could it be a text encoding issue?

Did you convert this dictionary from an epub book or a StarDict dictionary?
Or is it a DeDRMed commercial Kindle dictionary?
  • Kindles and Kindle apps support RTL books, but only if they have been converted to KFX files.
  • For RTL languages only KFX dictionaries will work, but they can't be generated with Calibre, PyGlossary or KindleGen/KindlePreviewer.
  • AFAIK, the Android Kindle app does not support sideloading of dictionaries. Some users were able to replace one of the default dictionaries with a custom dictionary, though.

Amazon is working toward making Hebrew an officially supported language for Kindle books. They will almost certainly include a Hebrew dictionary when that happens. (Recent Kindle firmware includes the Noto Sans Hebrew font.)

I have a DeDRMed commercial dictionary file that I converted to .epub, because Amazon no longer allows sending .mobi files to Kindle.

The Android Kindle app is able to load the sideloaded epub English-Hebrew dictionary, but it doesn’t show the Hebrew part in the correct direction.
However, kindle for iOS and Windows are able to show the same dictionary correctly.

By the way, the kindle apps are able to read and show Hebrew books that were saved in epub.

That’s good news.
I hope it won’t take them too long to add a proper English-Hebrew dictionary 🙏
