Ringo was my Dad's age. Dad died 7 years ago from prostate cancer. It had...is having profound affects on my family...on me, to lose my father when I was but a child of...32? Ringo is the drummer from The Beatles, whose music I grew up with via my father. He is about 40 in my head, the same age as my father, and their 20's I see in old slides from "before my time". I am now 20, turning 40 in a week. The 30 years difference has always been a big number in my mind, especially as we turn another decade older, along with the round-number year.
Intemperal perceptions may be an aspect of culture that has become apparent and is part of my own confused perceptions. But those same intemporal perceptions are also shocked at a personal level. Ringo and my father will always be 40, fighting the evidence of memory and media to the contrary. That I turn 40 shocks and amazes me. I feel that I have been here no time. That soon, like my father, likely through some randomly callous fate, I will not be.
