Every once in a while I decide to read the Bible, and like an idiot I always start at the beginning, instead of just picking a story at random. So I can confirm that, because I have read that story several times
The knowledge that is imparted by the tree's fruit is the ability to distinguish good from evil. Before they ate it, Adam and Eve were naked, but that was all right because they didn't know it was a bad thing. Or didn't sin exist before they ate the fruit? Or were they living in sin but that was all right with god because they didn't know it? Like all Old Testament stories, it's rather confusing and intriguing. Certainly raises way more questions than it answers, IMO.
Also, an interesting aspect to the story is that God chases Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden because he is afraid that after the tree of knowledge, they will find the tree of life - and then they would be the equals of God. Obviously he can't let that happen, so off they go.
Oops, sorry, wrong thread!
