In my line of work I've managed to hurt my eyes often. Bits of flying wood being the major culprits.
Then there's this time I managed to glue an eye shut.

Then several times it was lacquer thinner! Burns like hell!
But the worst was a wood splinter. Right in the center of the cornea. After two days of enduring the scratching, thinking it was only dust, I went to the clinic. The Doc saw nothing at first. So he called up a specialist who told him that it might be a micro sliver and taught him by phone how to remove it. He froze my eye with a special liquid and came at me with a scalpel!

I wouldn't let him come near. After calming me down, reasoning, he continued. But his shaking was so bad i still felt queasy.
Let's just say that a scalpel scratching your eye is an unpleasant sight... Up close...
