I was also curious about how they work. The optician told me that the lens is separated into different areas with different corrections (sometimes it's concentric circles, sometimes it's a different distribution). So the eye receives a sort of patchwork, some areas of the image are in focus, some aren't, and my poor brain is supposed to make sense of this

Apparently this works for about 60-70% of people. But since different lens brands have different distribution patterns, they may work differently for different people.
The ones I tried today are great for long and mid range vision but not so god for short range, I had some trouble reading. The previous ones were great for reading but I couldn't see my computer screen very well when working
