A good developer once told me, I would rather deliver half a product than a half-assed product. This rings very true. Customers complain most loudly about half baked features. Go read all the complaints about the Astak Pocket Pro's lit support. After 4 releases it still doesn't work right.
Would they have really had a bad product if they didn't included .LIT? Would they have lost sales? (perhaps). Would that have been worse than a bad reputation? (no).
Remember it only takes on mistake to get a bad reputation and it takes a long time to turn that around.
(Oh check the thread on the Delstar Openbook if you want to see another example of release a product with features that just didn't work and see the backlash.)
