I'm not a big curling fan (when someone asks if I saw the curling match on TV my response it normally that I was busy watching paint dry) but I'm constantly told that the sweeping takes a lot of physical effort. Especially when they used to use the old straw brooms and sweep rather then the new push brooms.
Personally I think it's because guys didn't know which end to hold a broom and they thought the women had too much of advantage. Either that or the little plaid skirts the women used to wear were too distracting.
