When you buy an ePub book from Fictionwise (as an example). You'll get a download link for a acsm.file. Which is a pointer to where the file can be downloaded.

In Firefox the browser gives you an option to "Save the File", or "Open Using" which allows you to select a program to open the file with. you need to select "Adobe Digital Editions". The file will then be downloaded to ADE.
