I rather like this. It requires rather slower reading than my normal fare - light on plot but rich in other ways. I can see why it's considered a modern classic, and one can't help wondering how much (if at all) Tolkien was influenced by it. Since he was working on his stories of Elves (the ones that were eventually published in part in "The Silmarillion") before this was first published, perhaps it's just another case of a coincidence of timing. Does anyone know?
