I'm not a big fan of audiobooks, because the text comes pre-interpreted in a way (by the chosen tone of voice), and its not always the way I would interpret it myself, or at least it doesn't allow me that freedom. I'm currently listening to Stephen Kings - The Stand, and I find it sooo boring... It really drags, and I find the plot pretty darn uninteresting. But, I looked up one of the "The Stand" topics here on the board, and most people seem to love it, so that got me thinking.. I realised that the major thing I didn't like about it, is that I absolutely loathe most of the characters in the book, which is definately due to the way the characters are pre-interpreted by the guy who read the book aloud. So you are absolutely right that this might happen... I'm *this* close to putting it down and starting a new one, as to not spoil the rest of the 2/3 of the book I have left (The new extended version), and read it my self some time in the future.
I do want to make a point though, that this is the first (Well, second) audiobook where I felt that the speaker is the fault for me not liking the book. All of his characters are speaking like hillbilly's and are so annoying to listen to.. And the major characters are always sooo whiney whenever they open their mouth.. Not really helping me to like this book..
The othe book was Dragonlance - Dragons of Autumn Twilight, read aloud by a danish speaker. I've always had a thing for Dragonlance, but this guy totally killed the book since he had such a monotone voice, couldn't pronounce the english names correct, and had absolutely no idea how to 'flow' with the book.
So I guess there's quite a difference when it comes to the choice of audiobooks..
