both my children, and all of my "acquired" children; exchange students, strays my kids brought home from school (who just never left!) were taught at a minnimum gun safety, and the ones who were into it, got into competition, and pretty much anything legal that they wished to explore.

another deal with my boy in particular... the daughter and I got pretty heavily into draft horses and showing in competition. he got drug along occasionally and was enlisted in the harnessing and hitching when we competed. much to his surprise this came in as a very valued knowledge base when the SEAL team he was assigned to started using mules in Afghanistan.

the moral of this story is; your Mom isn't ALWAYS nuts when she wants you to learn how to do things the hard way
