I'm not the one in for a surprise. I love even his less "successful" novels.

What I meant is that some people turned away from some of his recent writing - his less critically received novels; whereas, this novel is a "return to form" for those people who love the John Irving they encountered in some of the earlier novels.

I thought "A Widow For One Year," was beautiful and bittersweet. It's one of my favorite novels by him. The fact is, for me, I admire all of his work. I collect him in First Edition hardcover, and am lucky to own his 2nd and 3rd novels in First Edition, in F/F condition.
