I'm not familiar with Steakley.
Some feel Steakley's "Armor" is the best military sci-fi book ever written. I'm more of a Haldeman fan but not by much. It's really very good. Anyway, you can be sure in any discussion of the sub-genre by real fans of it, Steakley's name will come up in the top 3 or 4.
